First week of the New Year!

This week was pretty crazy!! I have to start it with an embarrassing story since... everybody loves those. :D

We were driving to a meeting with the anziani and nobody was talking so I said to Anziano Puff, "How do you like your eggs?" I was hungry so of course the subject had to be food. He answered, completely serious, "In my mouth." So I started laughing and said no, how does he like to cook them? And he answered, "I like eating them hard-boiled but with the shell still on them. The shell has a lot of protein." I made a face and thought about it and decided Anziano Puff was totally gross!

Sorella Margheriti nodded and said, "It's true, I like crumbling the shell and putting it in my salad."

To which I responded, "Seriously??"

"NO SORELLA, YOU DON'T ACTUALLY EAT THE SHELL!!!" Everybody in the car started cracking up (that's not supposed to be a pun, promise!) and I felt soooo stupid but it was really funny because everybody had me fooled. I decided I'd never believe anything Anziano Puff says again. :)

Let's keep in mind that I had just woken up from a nap and wasn't thinking straight!

Anyway... New Year's was fun! Sorella Margheriti made lentils (it's an Italian tradition) and they were super good! Before we ate Anziano Puff and Anziano Gardenhire came by with treats! Anziano Puff handed me a chocolate Christmas tree on a stick and said "For my daughter!" and turned to Sorella Margheriti with a panettone in his hands and said, "For Mom!" We laughed so hard because since the Christmas season came around everybody's been giving us panettone and we're pretty sick of eating it. But hey, it's the thought that counts!

That night we barely slept because the neighbors upstairs were yelling SUPER loud until 4 in the morning, I'm not even joking! They sounded pretty drunk. And the walls in the apartments are pretty thin so I could make out the words they were saying. Then at midnight all these explosions went off and there was a ton of screaming and I basically gave up on the idea of sleep. I did manage to drift off and woke up once every hour to a different noise. I was pretty tired in the morning so we used our half hour of exercise time to sleep instead. Oh boy. But we had a good day nonetheless!

So I managed to get a Book of Mormon in German from the anziani in Terni at our district meeting this past Tuesday! I've been studying it with my English Book of Mormon that the elders in Lowell gave me for my hour of language study. :) I'm learning a bunch of new words and it's a bit slow but I love it! I haven't made it to 1 Nephi quite yet... Gotta finish the introduction and stuff first. :)

When you're a missionary there's this thing called deep cleaning that everyone does on the same day three times a year...... and of course one of these days is January 1st. Why? Because everybody is busy sleeping so there's no missionary work to be done! Might as well stay inside all day and clean, right? Well, the Malara family invited us to their house for lunch on our deep cleaning day so we got permission from the zone leaders to go! They have two little girls, Elena and Letizia, and they're super cute! Also, Sorella Malara is a great cook. She made us sooo much food!!! We had tortellini, crispelle (basically fried dough), rolls, cotechino (this super greasy sausage thing that I didn't like at all hahaha), pork, lentils, fruit, and of course there was pandoro and a tart that Sorella Margheriti made. Everything was delicious!!! I was so full!

The bad part was coming home and having to finish all the cleaning. It actually took us three days to get everything done... because everything that could have gone wrong went wrong so it was a big trial of our patience! This next story is funny though. :)

There are a bunch of lightbulbs in our apartment that never got changed when they burned out because you need a really tall ladder to get to them and nobody knew where to find one. We were smart and asked the anziani so they lent us theirs (haha!). What we didn't realize was that the light in our room was switched on so when Sorella Margheriti unscrewed the lightbulb... it exploded in her face! I saw sparks fly and thought she was dead and that my bed (which had clothes from my closet all over it) was going to catch fire but luuuckily she was absolutely fine and nothing caught fire. :D (Dad is probably shaking his head at me right now) We shut off all the power in our apartment after that.

I also had some fun chipping away at all the ice that formed in our freezer. Sunglasses make for good safety goggles. :D

Sunday (yesterday) was really great! Mamma Gigante invited us to her house for lunch and we had been fasting so we were REALLY excited to break the fast with her food. She's an amazing cook. Also, since we didn't eat breakfast I had time to straighten my hair so I did. It felt super weird because I hadn't had it straight since I was at the MTC! It took forever because we had the oven on (Sorella Margheriti made another tart with ricotta and chocolate for Mamma Gigante) and with that and the straightener turned on the power went out. Italian problems!

So for lunch we had fettuccine but they were the fresh ones so they tasted wayyy better! Mamma Gigante made them with white sauce and peas and chunks of bacon and it was AMAZING. She also made chicken with pineapple slices. The syrup mixed with the chicken was sooooo good. And of course Sorella Margheriti's ricotta tart complemented the meal really well. I was happy. :) Nothing beats Italy's food, ever.

Side note, I bore my testimony in church during fast and testimony meeting! I'd never done that in church in Italian. It was cool. Anziano Puff and Anziano Gardenhire and Sorella Margheriti got to bear their testimonies too so that was great!! Missionary power!

Side note to James Whatcott: I met Sorella Dew at the villa in Rome the day my trainer came to pick me up! She is way cool and I told her about you! It made her happy :) I haven't met Anziano Mika yet but I'll let you know if I do!

Okay, one last thing cuz I know I wrote a ton. I finished the Book of Mormon for the third time in my life yesterday!!!!! It felt way cool! I'd been reading it in Italian so that was a first. I wrote the date at the end of Moroni so I wouldn't forget. What's cooler is that Sorella Margheriti finished it for the first time ever the same exact day as me!! Twinning :)

As for the spiritual experiences this week, we had some really great lessons with Precious and Vera. We finished reading the testimony of Joseph Smith with Precious and watched the video on the Restoration made by the Church. There was a really sweet spirit present and Precious felt it. She was really impressed by everything she'd seen and read and she believes that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that the Book of Mormon is true scripture. She has so much faith! We love her. :)

Vera has been thinking a lot about the things we've taught her so when we came to see her she asked us questions about the Spirit and what it feels like when he communicates with us. We shared some experiences and she absorbed everything like a sponge! She is super smart. And we've basically adopted her as our grandma. She gave us more panettone and chocolate and orzo and honestly, we could not be more spoiled by her. She's the best!

I miss you all and I hope everyone had a great new year! Prepare yourselves for the good things to come :)

_____________ Traduzione in italiano ______________

Allora ho risposto, : Veramente??"

L'ho letto in italiano.

E' tanto in gamba! L'abbiamo in pratica adottata come nonna.

Note from Sorella Battezzato's mom : I came across this blog post written by a missionary close to going home where she gives advices to new missionaries ( Link here: http://ldsmag.com/the-best-18-months-what-every-new-missionary-should-know/). This point particularly caught my attention:

"3. Laugh!!! For the love of anything holy please do not put on the name badge and become a lifeless walking talking breathing Mormon robot!! Be authentic to who you are because it is that authenticity that is uniquely yours that will cause you to connect with people that need you. Find JOY in the work and learn to laugh at yourself, the crazy guy that cusses you out for knocking on his door at the dark hours of the night aka (6:00), the people that slam the door in your face for the hundredth time because they don’t like “the witnesses”, the rat that goes flying across the room when you’re quoting the first vision…..Laugh it off."

This exemplifies Sorella Battezzato as shown by the following pictures. So keep on laughing and smiling, Sorella!

Last week of my first transfer!

Oh wow, this week was sooo good! I'm excited to write about it. :)

First off, we talked to 37 people this week through street contacting!!! That has never ever happened to us before! Our highest before that was 15 so this is big news. I was so excited when we tallied up our numbers Sunday night! Since I got to Rome 5 it's been a bit of a struggle to get people to stop and talk to us but we've been trying a new approach and... we're definitely seeing miracles. I hope this will lead us to some new investigators soon!

We had a really important lesson with Precious this week. Ale came with us so we were a triple force you could say! We talked to her about Heavenly Father's love for her and how much He wants her to find the fulness of the gospel in this life. We bore our testimonies that this Church belongs to Jesus Christ and that it's God's true church on the earth today. She said an amazing prayer at the end of the lesson and prayed to know for herself that the Church is true, so that was really cool to see. We're always amazed by her great faith. :) Then she loaded each of us with a bag of frollini (Italian breakfast cookies) and ANOTHER panettone and a whole bottle of orange soda. We absolutely did not want to take things from her but she insisted a ton. I think we're covered for breakfast food from now until the end of my mission!

Vera is still thinking a lot about what she wants to do so we visited her and had a really relaxed lesson about temples. We gave her the magazine published by the Church with all the pictures of our temples and she was really interested. She loved the pictures and she said she would read it! That was big because she hasn't really read much of the Book of Mormon so we're hoping the Spirit will work with her through the subject of temples. Gah, she's just really great!

No new investigators yet but I've been feeling positive regardless. Also, I can totally feel my Italian getting better! I sass Mamma Gigante a lot now and she'll say, "You're just a greenie ( a new missionary) and you're already talking to me like this?! Disgraziata!" Hahahaha you can't get close with Mamma Gigante and not let her attitude rub off on you sooooo... her fault! ;)

Speaking of the famiglia Gigante, we were at their house twice this week and we have so much fun every time! We're still helping Mamma Gigante out with the baby shower stuff (it's this Saturday so we're finishing up) but the bonus is how much she feeds us. Ohhh man, her food is good. It keeps me full for hours!! She's so generous to do all that for us.

We had our branch conference yesterday so there were a lot of members in church! Presidente and Sorella Waddoups were there so I got to translate for Sorella Waddoups again and kept her company! I was pretty busy all throughout church but I talked to so many people and it just felt really good to be around members! I think you appreciate them so much more on your mission because you  miss their spirit and enthusiasm and love for the gospel during the week. But every Sunday we have the opportunity to recharge our spiritual batteries and I absolutely love it.

Sooo, Saturday was the day for transfer calls! We found out that Anziano Puff is being transferred to Statte. And he's going to train!!! So I guess that means I'll have a little brother in the mission. Haha :) We're sad to see him go. He shared an amazing testimony in church. He's a really good example of diligence and love for the gospel. Luckily we have him until Wednesday!

Okay, I need to talk about food for a second. This week we stayed out to do some finding during our lunch hour so I went to a cheap supermarket by our house and bought two pagnotte, some Swiss cheese, and a few slices of turkey from the deli. We went to eat with Betta at her bar (Cafe') and she gave me olive oil and some fresh oregano from her garden so that sandwich was EASILY the best turkey sandwich I've ever made in my life. Even the cheapest stuff here tastes better than it does in the States. Like wow.

On Sunday two anziani who are "dying"(who are finishing their mission) this week came to Rome 5 to visit before they left! Their names are Anziano Birberg and Anziano Burton. Burton's from Salt Lake City and he went to BYU before the mission so I'll probably see him there when I come back. Sooo many BYU people out here... It's awesome!!!! I know some missionaries who applied while they were out here and they're still waiting to hear back from the admissions office so I feel bad... That must be stressful!! I know Birberg applied. We'll see what happens!

Today's going to be SICK because we're in Rome to go sightseeing and I’m wearing jeans. Appreciate your casual clothes. Hahaha

We're meeting up with Sorella Decker (Sorella Margheriti's old companion in Rome 5) and her comp soon so I gotta run! I hope everyone has a fantastic week. Ciao ciao!

                                      Traduzione in italiano

Questa settimana e' stata cosi' bella! Sono cosi' emozionata a parlarvene. :)

Apprezzate i vostri vestiti sportivi. Ahahah

Ciao ciao!

The Colosseum/ Il Colosseo

(Sorella Battezzato loves horses and she can ride them. She asked the guy outside the Colosseum if she could take a picture with his horse)/  Quel cavallo stava davanti al colosseo quindi ho chiesto al proprietario se potevo fare una foto. :)))

The Colosseum is right out of the metro station and Sorella Margheriti took Sorella Battezzato there while she was keeping her eyes closed. She could open them only when she was standing in front of it and she screamed and jumped for joy!( I can picture her :))

Mamma quell' edificio รจ stupendo. Senza parole.

The work continues!

This week's post is going to be a bit shorter than usual, time seems to never be enough when I write home...

Anyway, this week kept us busy as well. I hardly took any pictures, we were so preoccupied with all the stuff we were doing! But it started on a really good note: last P-day I found a letter in my mailbox and a package from my family so I was way stoked about that! Shout-out to my Lowell Ward for that SPECTACULAR poster with all the notes on it. I love you all! It means so much to me that you guys did that for me!!! :)

We did some door-to-door work this week but it wasn't successful. People have been nice to us but they usually turn us away or tell us to come back another time (which is better than nothing at all!). Not our favorite way of proselyting!

We did manage to have four lessons this week! I know that's a way small number but we had some great conversations and learned a lot from our investigators. Vera and Precious are making progress and Precious has a baptismal date for February 7th so we're way excited to help her get there!!! She's been so open with us and every time we love her more. Vera is more hesitant about a date because she's taking the decision to be baptized very seriously and she wants to be sure that it's what she wants to do before she commits. She's been doing a lot of thinking and we're so proud of her for understanding what we teach her and working hard to make good decisions. Hoping for more good things :) We also had a lesson with Betta, the lady who owns a bar (this is what Italians call a cafe.. ) in Monterotondo. It's usually almost impossible to teach her because there are always guys in the bar but when we stopped by yesterday she was alone! We watched some Mormon Messages (short videos) with her and talked about temples and we know the Spirit was present. :)

Big news! We changed locations for church! We're still in a hotel but this new place is MUCH nicer and in a much more convenient location for us and our investigators!!! We'll see how this affects the work in the coming weeks!

Alright, frustrating story of the week. The other day we were teaching English to a couple of 30-ish Muslim men on the piazza of our town. It was going well until the subject turned to the Book of Mormon... One of the guys is a more hardcore Muslim than the other so he got mad at us about a few things and he was still smiling and stuff but you could see in his eyes that he thought we were idiots or something. That's the scariest kind of mad! We ended things on a peaceful note  but we can see that they are definitely not open to hearing about the gospel and we don't feel good about teaching them so that's the end of that. Hahaha. I was really angry while we walked away from that lesson but I learned that the Lord gives you bad experiences with people to teach you to stand by your testimony and let the Spirit comfort you when people don't respect what you believe. Phew! We were tired from that.

Highlight of the week to follow that sour note! :) We did companion exchanges (we call them scambi in Italian) with the sister leaders in Rome 1 on Friday! They're the equivalent of zone leaders but they're sisters. :) Their names are Sorella Clyde and Sorella Marsh and I LOVE THEM TO DEATH!!! We took the train and the metro into a city close to Rome. It took forever but it was so worth it! I started out with Sorella Marsh and we talked to a few people and found a less active member! I made a goal to get more numbers from people because Presidente Waddoups told me it's super important so I did just that! It wasn't even hard to ask and only one person said no!

For lunch we went back to the apartment and had couscous with vegetables! There were six of us because Sorella Clyde has been training Sorella Jones and Sorella Marsh is finishing up her last couple weeks of training Sorella Frandsen so it was a party. I haven't lived with that many girls since BYU! After lunch I went out with Sorella Clyde to teach a lesson and then we went to do some proselyting with questions written on colored paper. The first guy we stopped talked to us for an hour!!!! His name was Sam. He was sure that he doesn't need to be taught about anything of our church because he's content with his spirituality but we still had a great conversation and he felt completely at ease talking to us. There's the Spirit working for us :)

We have this expression, "scambi magic", because whenever we do scambi the work is so successful!!! I love it. I had such a great time and I talked to a lot of awesome people! It helped fire me up for the work in our area, which I'm really grateful for during this sorta dead period where it's hard to find people to teach. The work goes on!

Yesterday Sorella Margheriti and I made pancakes!!!!!!!! She had a bag of mix that someone gave her for Christmas so we finally made it and IT WAS SO GOOD. Nobody judge me for this but... I like to pour extra virgin olive oil on my pancakes. If it's not extra virgin I won't use it. It sounds gross but it's soooo good hahaha I'm not crazy, I promise. So that was fun! Too bad our whole house smells like oil from frying the pancakes. :D ...

One last thing :) I was really sneaky on the train this week and handed two little kids some cards of the Rome temple to play with. Both times the parents looked at the cards and were totally curious and our number was on the back so maybe they'll call us, maybe they won't. Did I mention I love kids a lot? :)

Other than that, our relationship with the members of Rome 5 and our anziani keeps getting better! I love everybody here and I feel so blessed to serve in this area. I have high hopes for the future. :)

Until next week!

Questa settimana siamo state parecchio impegnate. :)

Ieri io e Sorella Margheriti abbiamo fatto i pancakes!!!!!!!

Alla prossima settimana!
