Transfer 7, Week 1

Note: The names of the investigators and less-active members have been changed

We went to two funerals this week... A bit unexpected to say the least. The first was for Maria's husband like I explained last week and the second was for the mother of a sister in our ward who had been sick for a while. African and Catholic funerals are very, very different. They show their grief in different ways. All of this just makes me that much more grateful for the plan of salvation! The Lord really has been testing and   strengthening our testimony of that. And it's a blessing to be able to comfort the ones left behind when somebody passes away. I really believe that's why God sent us here. For them.

It hasn't been good lately. A lot of people have been standing us up for appointments and the rest don't answer when we call or text them or they just tell us they don't have time to meet with us. It's pretty discouraging and frustrating, considering how hard we've been working. A few other missionaries are experiencing the same thing so it's really just the summer syndrome, you could say. Everybody's trying to get their last few days in at the beach and they're getting ready to go back to school and work so everything is a

little chaotic. Just gotta endure it while it lasts.

We visited Maria early in the week. She's doing much better. The members pitched in to get her groceries and we made some cookies for her and her son. She was really grateful for the help. We talked to her about eternal families and gave her a picture of the Rome temple to hang up somewhere. She wants to go and she knows it'll be hard but when there's a will there's a way. She's healing slowly but we know the Lord is taking care of her in better ways than we can.

We did manage to see Rosario. He actually called us first and told us he'd read a chapter of the Book of Mormon!!!! When we met with him he asked us about some stuff he didn't understand and then we taught him about how we can receive light and truth. Honestly, he kind of overcomplicated everything and told us there's no such thing as absolute truth. And he doesn't believe that the gospel is simple. It was a little frustrating. We're not sure how committed he is and he doesn't seem to understand why we're here... Pazienza. We planned out a really good lesson for the next time so let's see if that helps him.

Gabe (one of the anziani's investigators) left for Canada on Friday. He's been going to church here in Ragusa for two years now so a lot of missionaries have known him and now all of a sudden he's gone for the next two years! It's pretty sad for us. Gabe was a big part of Ragusa. But he's off to bigger and better things now! He's going to school in Canada and he's also going to continue attending church there so we're excited for him! We already miss him.

President authorized an app called Duolingo this week so I've been learning Swedish! It's so much fun learning a language from scratch! Seriously. I hadn't done that since learning my first words of German in fifth grade. Ready for this? Sköldpaddan äter en jordgubbe. The turtle is eating a strawberry. I think turtle and strawberry are my favorite words in Swedish... Got a good kick out of that. :D Also the word for bear is björn. Now I know where that name comes from!

I gave a talk in church yesterday (Sunday) about the gospel being preached around the world and it was AWESOME! I always get so nervous before giving talks in Italian but like as soon as I got up there I had no trouble enunciating and stating my ideas and explaining things that I hadn't written word-for-word and it was SO COOL. The gift of tongues is real. I said a lot of thank-you prayers after that. Also that scripture that says "if ye are prepared ye shall not fear" is totally true because I'd been preparing that talk for more than a week. (It really pays not to procrastinate hahaha)

I'm halfway through my mission now. Weird. It's interesting being in the second half. You're trying to figure out what kind of missionary you want to be and you're being prepared for leadership roles and you're aware that you will probably be training very soon... But really though, it's strange to know that my mission is officially winding down. Gonna make sure I look back with no regrets once it's over. :)

Side note, my cousin Gabriele left for the Provo MTC this morning. We now have two Battezzatos on the mission field! WOOHOO!!!!! I am so proud of him. He's gonna tear it up in France. Also he'll be trilingual by the time he gets back. Italian, English, and French. Hooray!!!

We have a specialized training in Catania tomorrow so we're taking the bus down there tonight. I have no idea what kind of specialized training is going on but I'm sure it'll be good. :)

Well! That's all I've got for this week. Alla prossima :)

                                     TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Bisogna solo perseverare finche' dura.

Abbiamo fatto una visita a Maria all'inizio della settimana. Sta molto meglio.

Siamo riuscite a incontrare Rosario.

Ora so da dove viene quel nome!

EVVIVA! Sono cosi' fiera di lui. Andra' alla grande in Francia. Inoltre sara' trilingue quando tornera'. Italiano, inglese e francese. Urra'!!!
