Transfer 2, Week 4

(Note : The names of the investigators have been changed )

Ahhhh transfer calls are THIS Saturday... I'm freaking out. I wrote Presidente Waddoups and told him that my comp and I have been praying a lot to stay together another transfer... By the time you all hear from me again we'll know our fate. No pressure right???

First things first, we found out that Elder Bednar (a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) is coming to Rome April 28!!!! All the missionaries are invited! Elder Bednar's going to explain how to use iPads in the mission so that must mean we're getting them soon!!!! We are SO excited!!!! Know that there was a fair deal of freaking out on our part. :)

We're really looking forward to Zone Conference tomorrow! Rome 5 has been preparing a little musical number so we're excited for that too! Pictures next week. :)

This week was good! We met with the Jehovah's Witnesses again and we brought Maylen Garcia with us. This time Alfonso brought his son Matteo. He's probably our age and was very nice. We taught them a little more about the Restoration and Alfonso had a lot of questions, but he listened a more this time! We bore testimony often of what we said and Maylen did too. It was a powerful experience and we left feeling really good about what we'd said. Hopefully things will keep progressing with them. Who knows!

As for the other investigators, we haven't been able to see Sara yet. We haven't left Rita but she's not progressing. We're still trying to figure it out. We'll see what happens.

Vito and Melania both accepted a baptismal invite though! They're not sure about the date but we've gotten this far with them and it's super good news. Now we just have to get them to church.

Yesterday during our finding in Monterotondo we talked to a guy our age from Moldavia  named Vladimir. He speaks five languages!!! Russian, Spanish, Greek, Romanian, and Ukrainian!!!! Gah!!! Those are all SUPER HARD!!! He was really sweet, he didn't speak much Italian so he communicated with little words and hand gestures and mostly Spanish. Hahaha! He took like three brochures about the Gospel in Russian and he started reading them right away so we hope he'll look into the Church. :)

Right after that we talked to a 64-year-old woman named Lucia who had run away from home because she was sick of everybody and wanted to be alone. The whole conversation was really, really sad. She cried a little bit and we felt so sorry for her. She said she'd been homeless for two days and that she didn't have a single cent left in her wallet. She was thinking about going to a relative's house in Rome but she wasn't sure.

It's so sad to find people in these kinds of situations. You could walk by someone who's suffering more than you could ever know and you wouldn't be able to tell. Concetta was really grateful for the time we spent with her and when we walked past the place she had been sitting an hour or so later she was gone, so we hope she went to a relative's house like she said.

We stopped a grandpa named Lauro! I didn't know that name existed! It's the guy version of Laura but I'd never heard it before. Lauro worked with an agency that identifies fraud or something so he's developed this huge distrust of mankind and he gave us all sorts of warning against trusting people and especially religious leaders. We wished he could see how the leaders in the LDS church conform to the standards God has set for His Church but he was very firm in his beliefs so we respected that. He accepted a pass-along card of the temple in Rome and we talked to him about genealogy and the Family Search website so maybe this will help convince him to explore the Church! Who knows. :)

That's about all the big news I have for this week. The pictures will tell the rest (there are tons, prepare yourselves!). Alla prossima!

                            TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Ora dobbiamo solo portarli in chiesa.

E' cosi' triste trovare persone in queste situazioni.

Transfer 2, Week 3

As of right now I'm kinda sad because I've already hit the halfway point in this transfer and once it's over Sorella Margheriti and I could be separated... Transfer calls are coming up so I'm really hoping for one more transfer together!! We'll see!!

This week was a bit slow compared to last week. A lot of our contacts either didn't pick up the phone or were busy. :( It stinks when that happens but it's just another part of missionary work! In the meantime we're still talking to a lot of people on the street. We had 54 conversations this week even without the extra boost from companion exchanges!!! So that's always good. :)

Highlight of this week: we're teaching two Jehovah's Witnesses.  We started talking to them, completely unaware of who they were. They told us they were JWs but they were nice to us and they did start questioning a lot of what we believe in buuut it wasn't aggressive or demeaning. They wanted to meet with us to learn more so that's exactly what we did! We taught them an informal lesson on Saturday. They both have a copy of the Book of Mormon now. They were pretty interested in reading it. They had a lot of not-very-approving things to say about it/our faith but we can see that they want to understand why we believe what we believe so that's a start! One of them is named Adelmo but I can't remember the other one's name... He's pretty quiet. Anyway, hopefully we'll see good things from them. Who knows!

I kind of forgot that Saturday was Valentine's Day. :D There doesn't seem to be so much hype for it around here or maybe us missionaries are just oblivious? Hahaha. :) But we did get a little gift that day from the daughter of a man named Luca who we stopped in a park! Olimpia (she's 10) was making little wreaths with some daisies and she gave them to us while we were talking to Luca. They're catholic but they want to come to church next Sunday! We have Luca's number so we're REALLY hoping they'll come. They were so sweet and friendly to us. :)

This week we have a huuuge goal to visit more families in our branch. We're super determined to improve our friendships with them because we know they need to be able to trust the missionaries!! And they're all amazing people so who wouldn't want to get to know them better? :)

We were FINALLY able to see Vera this past week but she doesn't seem very interested in coming to church... or in doing any of the other things we've invited her to do. We might have to do the "Do or Die" lesson this week... Basically you tell a non-progressing investigator that you can't keep teaching them. It would be my first so I'm not really looking forward to it. Then again nobody looks forward to those. Leaving an investigator is ridiculously hard. So we're going to do our best to be gentle and loving and if we have to stop teaching Vera we'll still visit her every once in a while.

We might have to do the same with Precious. She has been reading a little from the Book of Mormon but she hasn't really been able to understand that even though there are many good churches in the world, only one has the fulness of the Gospel and is led by Jesus Christ Himself. It's been frustrating for us because we've felt the Spirit VERY strongly while teaching her (and she's felt it too) but it seems like every time we take a step forward with her she falls back twice as many. We love her and we're great friends with her but we're thinking the lessons have to come to a close. Again, we'll see what happens.

There's a bit of sad news. But I still love the mission of course! With the bad must come the good. I'm excited to see what this week will bring. :) Alla prossima! Until next time!

                                TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Erano molto interessati a leggerlo.

The BEST WEEK EVER!

Prepare yourselves because I have a LOT to say this week.
We started things off on a good foot last week by hanging out with Maylen and Johana Garcia and Alessandra on our P-day! We walked around Monterotondo Alto and looked at some stores and took a lot of pictures together and talked. It was way fun! I missed being able to hang out with a group of girls. I love them so much! :)

After hanging out with the girls we went to see Precious for a Family Home Evening lesson! We made cinnamon rolls together and taught her the story of the brother of Jared. We had a great time together. :) After the lesson Anziano Bellows and Anziano Gardenhire picked us up in the car. They had gone to visit Fratello Dello Stritto and his son Dario and they're Sicilian so they gave the anziani red oranges from SICILY for us!!! I HAVE NEVER EATEN SUCH A DELICIOUS CITRUS IN MY LIFE. I was in heaven. I could eat a basketful of arance rosse. Gahh. :D

Tuesday morning started out on the wrong side of the bed... literally. The phone was charging on the floor next to my bed so when the alarm went off at 6:27 I rolled over to turn it off... and my ENTIRE BED TIPPED OVER WITH ME STILL IN IT. It all happened so so fast that my groggy brain barely comprehended it but I was soooo scared!!!!!! Luckily my blankets muffled the sound because Sorella Margheriti was just barely waking up and I would have felt SO bad if I'd woken her up with a huge crash. She said later that she didn't even realize my bed had tipped over, it was so quiet. It took me ten minutes to get out and put everything back the way it was before. I was also super grossed out because tile floors are CONSTANTLY dusty and who knows what my bed picked up off the floor. Sigh... It's funny to think back to this now but in the moment I was not happy! Haha :D

After our district meeting in Terni on Tuesday we got pizza from this guy called Ali Baba who knows the missionaries well since we're in there at least once every transfer! I downed three giant slices without a problem, I was so hungry. Ali looked at me and said to Sorella Margheriti, "E' piccola ma riesce a mangiare un sacco!" I'm small but I can eat a ton. This is true. :D Ali makes kebabs too (they're aaawesome) so I had a slice of pizza with kebab meat on it. Yum yum YUM. I think I might have to challenge our anziani to an eating competition one of these days. (Don't freak out Mom, I'm not getting fat. :D)

Wednesday night we planned a fireside with the anziani at a cafe. We got some pasticcini (pastries) and I'm not telling you guys what we planned but the fireside is tomorrow and it is gonna be sweeeet. So I'm excited!

On Thursday we had a lesson with a new investigator!!! His name is Marco and he's around 40 years old. We met him during finding in Passo Corese and had our lesson at the mall in Fiano Romano. He bought us gelato (I got the usual - dark chocolate. Mmmmm) and we taught him about the Restoration! So that was awesome. He's really shy but nice.

Friday was the day of MIRACLES.

We did scambi (companion exchanges) again with the sister leaders, Sorella Clyde and Sorella Marsh. This time they came to us! I was with Sorella Clyde for the day. I could spend hours and hours writing about what we did and who we talked to but in brief: we stopped fiiiifteeeeen people and got a bunch of numbers!!! We also ran into this guy Andrea who trashed on Mormons to us like a month ago but this time he was totally polite and didn't say anything bad. It was crazy. Maybe this means his opinion of Mormons has changed? So that was good!!! Sorella Margheriti and Sorella Marsh had a lot of success too! In total the four of us talked to TWENTY-NINE PEOPLE. THAT IS A LOT FOR ONE DAY. GAHHH. I still can't believe it. Scambi magic is REAL! We had such a good time together and we really saw how the Lord works miracles with people we teach when we put in our absolute best effort. :) We were also able to teach Melisande and Laban (a new convert) and they are both making such good progress!! We have high hopes for Melisande. She's looking for the true church and she loves the Book of Mormon. SO many blessings!!!!

Saturday was totally weird! We were going to do some finding in Monterotondo alto but since it was the weekend the buses were waaaayyy slower at showing up... We ended up talking to a 20-year-old guy named Francesco at the bus stop and his friend Federico who showed up later (he looked like he was 17) the whole time that we were waiting. They got on the bus with us when it came and we kept talking there. We had taught Francesco the Restoration earlier and Federico was curious about who we were and what we do as missionaries. It was way cool! You don't usually make friends during street contacting. :) They also asked me half a billion questions about American food (they think we all eat a ton of fast food!) and how the government is structured (in the meantime they were complaining about politics in Italy) and if American barbecue meat is as good as everyone says (I said YES ARE YOU KIDDING) and why Americans eat so much heavy stuff for breakfast (Italians don't like eggs and bacon and pancakes for breakfast aaat all) and if you get shot for trespassing on private property (they think we go around shooting everybody... *facepalm*) and they also made fun of American coffee because (and I agree) it is disgusting and watered-down. :D So basically it was a very varied conversation but now they can say they have a good impression of Mormon missionaries! Small steps. :)

Later that day I got a free Pink Lady apple from a fruttivendolo (fruit guy? I can't translate that haha) because I only wanted to buy one and I was stoked because those are my FAVORITE apple. And they're expensive. After that Sorella Margheriti went to buy some new boots because hers were totally trashed and soaked with rainwater. Turns out the lady working in the store who was helping her find boots knows a family in our branch!! She absolutely loves Mormons and she said she never felt as good as she did when she went to church and hung out with the members there. We were so excited!!! Her name is Francesca. She told us to go visit her in the store every once in a while since she works a lot and doesn't have much time to herself (which also means she can't come to church..... sad....). But that experience was so crazy!!!! The Lord works in mysterious ways. :)

On Sunday I had time after church to play the grand piano in the lobby of the hotel we have church in and it was SOOOO NICE to be able to play a real piano!!!!!!! Except I was really embarrassed because as soon as I started playing like ten members of the branch flocked around me asking me questions about what I was playing (it was a little thing I wrote a while ago, nothing huge). Hahaha it was weird to be in the spotlight like that. But I talked to a couple of them for a while about music and stuff so I really enjoyed that!!! :)

Sunday night was great because we taught a lesson to TWO new investigators!!! Their names are Jennifer and Daniel. They're from Nigeria and they have a little boy named Prosper who says a lot of random words in Italian and is really cute. Jennifer's sister Lucy was there too and she lives in Napoli so she was only visiting but she gave us her number to give to the missionaries in Napoli! Jennifer and Daniel accepted a Book of Mormon and said they want to come to church and see how we worship. They were all SO OPEN!!!!! We found Jennifer during finding last week. I am so glad we stopped her. We feel really good about them! High hopes for them too. :)

In total this week we had... 63 CONVERSATIONS just from street contacting and we now have TWELVE NEW contacts/potential investigators!!!!!! These numbers are AMAZING. Sorella Margheriti and I feel so so so so incredibly blessed. The work is really advancing and we can see ourselves becoming more confident in stopping people and it's getting easier for both of us to teach and bear testimony of what we know. I LOVE this work. There's no place I would rather be right now than here in Rome 5 with the members of our branch (I adore them, I really can't believe how much!) and with all these potential investigators and nice people who take the time out of their day to stop and talk to us about their faith.

This is the true Church of Jesus Christ on the earth today. Of that I have absolutely no doubt. And I am more than happy to tell people that every day of my mission. What an amazing opportunity.

I love you all. :) Have a great week!

                                     TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Ero in Paradiso. Ne potrei mangiare una cesta  piena. :D

In tutto noi quattro abbiamo parlato a VENTINOVE PERSONE! QUELLO E' TANTO PER UN GIORNO SOLO. GAHH.

Domenica sera e' stata bellissima perche' abbiamo insegnato a DUE nuovi investigatori!!!

:) Buona settimana!
