Transfer 3, Week 3

NOTE: The names of the investigators have been changed

Everybody, prepare yourselves for this bit of news...

This week we taught THIRTEEN LESSONS, FIVE of which were with members! We now have two investigators with a baptismal date because Luisa accepted the invite! Four of our investigators are progressing and we have THREE new investigators! We reached our goals!!!!!

Part of the reason we taught so many lessons were our scambi with Sorella Marsh and Sorella Jones! They came Thursday afternoon and left the next day. In that time we taught lessons to Marta, Luisa, a new investigator named Valerio, Rita, and an older woman named Teresa who the anziani used to teach. Those are a LOT of lessons in just 24 hours!! I had the opportunity to work with Sorella Marsh and gosh, she is so great. I'm really glad I have her and Sorella Margheriti as STLs (sister leaders) for this transfer. :)

Luisa was fascinated by the fact that we are baptized by immersion. Sorella Jones and Sorella Marsh told me that she was raving about it for like 20 minutes, they couldn't even get out the baptismal date because she kept talking about how incredible it was! Hahaha! I wish I'd been able to see that! We're really happy about her decision! Anyway, I feel like we met Luisa at a critical moment in her life because her dad was really sick when we first met her and last week we found out that he'd passed away. It's interesting to think that maybe there are missionaries on the other side of the veil teaching her father as we teach her. It's an incredible feeling to be a part of that. :)

Marta's baptismal date is for the 11th! It's coming quick so we taught her the last few lessons and now we're getting her acquainted with the structure and organization of the church. We're gonna review the Restoration and then do a mock baptismal interview before she gets interviewed by Anziano Stout (our district leader) on Friday! Things are going smoothly and quickly! This would be my first baptism on the mission and Sorella Margheriti and I would also have the privilege to have followed her throughout the WHOLE teaching process! We are SOOO happy!!!!!

We had our last lesson with Loredana on Friday. Pina didn't show up until the very end because she was busy but this turned out to be an advantage because we were able to focus more on Loredana's needs. Also, she's a much better listener than Pina so this was good too. :D But sadly we weren't able to get through to her. We taught her about our purpose as missionaries and that we're all spirit children of God and that there was a life before this one. She didn't believe any of that and it was really weird because we read the same verses from the Bible together but she interpreted them so differently... Huh. Well, in the end she realized on her own that there's no point in seeing each other anymore. We did get to bear testimony to her and we hope that left her with something to think about.

Alfonso brought a new friend to the lesson on Saturday - his name is Mauro and he's 23. We talked more about the Plan and about the purpose of the Fall and then about the Book of Mormon. This is where Alfonso closed up a lot. He really doesn't like the Book of Mormon. He doesn't even want to read it. He wanted concrete proof that it's true and then he started asking us about the Church's stance on warfare and, well, if we can't get him to read the Book of Mormon we're going to have to stop teaching him as well. Mauro was a lot more open-minded and at the end he actually asked us if we could give him a copy of the Book of Mormon because he was curious and wanted to take a look at it. That was crazy!!! I really hope he's been reading it... I don't even know if Alfonso will bring him next time. We'll see. But! I did get to bear testimony to Alfonso that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that our prophet today has been called of God and that he leads God's church on the earth today and Alfonso smiled while I said it so I think he felt something, because I know I did. Testimony is power. :)

We're still fighting to help Rita decide to commit to coming to church. She said we'll see but she was really grateful for all our efforts. She's really torn between this church and hers so I understand that it's not an easy position to be in. We'll keep doing our best to support her but we haven't been teaching her as much lately.

Sara, on the other hand, has decided to commit to reading the Book of Mormon! We had a great lesson with her about the Savior's atonement and resurrection and about what it means for her. She thinks from a very intellectual perspective and she wants to try to strengthen herself spiritually. And she said she felt something that made her want to read! We explained to her that that's the influence of the Spirit. :) We'll follow up on her this week and see how she's doing!

Bertina's husband, Martino has started joining in on our lessons! We ended up giving him a brief overview of the Plan of Salvation and taught him the Restoration, then watched the Restoration video with them and their kids. Martino hasn't been to church in ten years and has a really bad opinion of the church leaders he knew when he was a teenager. He was telling us how it makes no sense that all these churches fight against each other. He's kind of skeptical about God but he knows He exists, he just doesn't commit to a specific faith. Anyway, Martino was totally absorbed by the Restoration movie and afterwards when we talked about it he was like, "Normally with movies like that they exaggerate everything but that wasn't fake. That was all real." He believes that the Restoration really happened and that Joseph Smith saw the Father and Jesus Christ!! We didn't even have to say anything! And what's even crazier is that we invited them to come to church and he looks at Bertina and says, "Well? Let's go!" I was like, WHAT?! He said he's doing it for his children but that's so amazing because it shows that he really cares about them and wants them to grow up with good principles! This week we're going to give him the baptismal invite and see what he says. I really and truly love this family. We're praying and hoping that they'll commit to living the gospel. :)

Things with the members are going well! We were with the famiglia Calabrese Friday night and with Ale, Mamma Gigante and the famiglia Simoncini for Family Home Evening on Monday. And church yesterday was a spiritual EXPLOSION, it was so cool. I was translating Ale's farewell talk (she's leaving for her mission in Madrid in less than two weeks) for Sorella Day and Sorella Waddoups and I had to struggle not to choke up while I did it because the Spirit was so strong!! Basically the members of this branch are just amazing. They're such good people and they work so hard to build their faith and strengthen each other. I absolutely love them. :)

Side note, we saw the new Because He Lives video that the Church put out. IT IS SWEEET. Go watch it, right now http://www.mormon.org/easter

As we all know, Easter is next week. That video really has helped me think about the Savior's Resurrection, as well as His Atonement. There's no greater gift that He could have given than His life so that we could all live for eternity. I am so grateful for that sacrifice. I've seen how the Atonement works in people's lives during my mission and I look forward to gaining an even deeper understanding of how it works in my life as well. Take some time to reflect on what it means to you. It will change your perspective of yourself and it will give you the strength to keep going.

Buona Pasqua (Happy Easter) to all of you! Un abbraccio forte forte :)

 TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Siamo COSI' felici!!!!!

Abbiamo fatto l'ultima lezione a Loredana venerdi'.

E' TROPPO BELLO. Andatelo a vedere  http://www.mormon.org/ita/pasqua

Buona Pasqua a tutti voi! Un abbraccio forte forte :)
