Transfer 6, Week 6

Note: The names of the investigators and less-active members have been changed

This week was the hardest week of my mission. Without a doubt.

I don't know where to begin with this, but... this week I gained a deeper testimony that God's plan for us to return to His presence is so, so real. For a long time we have been working with a young less-active woman from Africa named Maria. She's become a dear friend to us and her testimony of the gospel is very strong, despite her inability to come to church regularly and all the horrific trials she has endured in her life. Her husband had been sick for a while and was hospitalized two weeks ago. We visited him often but didn't realize that this past Friday was the last time we would see him in this life... He passed away that night after a long battle with pancreatic cancer that was unfortunately discovered too late. He had just come over from Africa six months ago after being separated from his wife and six-year-old son for six years (he didn't meet his son until he got here). It's crazy how just a month ago the five of us were hanging out together having a good time... It's incredible how life can change so quickly. We're still shocked and saddened at the turn things have taken...

The anziani had given Maria's husband a very powerful and spiritual priesthood blessing just last week. We fasted and prayed so hard for him. Maria had high hopes that he would get better and join the Church someday. But the Lord's ways are not always our ways. Amid all the grief and heartache, Sorella Reber and I know of a surety that Maria's husband has been taken home to a God who is sending people to teach him the gospel. And someday their family will be sealed for eternity in the temple. Our job now is to prepare this little family for that. It's such a humbling opportunity to be here for Maria and her son at this time. We know we're here in Ragusa right now because God needed us to be here for them.

In other news... My birthday was really great - miraculous, to say the least. We did some finding and got three new contacts and many people called me to wish me a happy birthday. :) When you're a missionary, those things mean a lot more than they would have otherwise. I also met a friend of one of our old investigators who was visiting from Germany and we taught him a lot about the gospel. Unexpected reaching opportunity! I always love those. :) I didn't practice my German with him because it's gotten quite bad... Haha.

Just yesterday a group of kids heard us speaking English as we walked by and stopped us to ask us who we were and where we were from! We actually exchanged numbers with one of them and invited them all to English Course. There was a little one with big eyes named Francesco who totally melted my heart, he was like a little adult in a kid's body but so sweet!! And before meeting them we stopped an Australian man and taught him all of the Restoration and before THAT we got a lady's number who wanted to know more about the Church! We met a lot of really cool people this week and I'm glad, because right now we have no progressing investigators and very few people to teach. And not having work is really, really hard, especially when you're on the Lord's time. But good things are coming. This is just the beginning.

I keep gaining more trust in the Savior and His Atonement the longer I'm on the mission. As of tomorrow (note: today, August 25) I'll have been a missionary for nine months, and hitting your halfway point really gets you thinking. My time in Ragusa in particular has been very challenging but with a purpose.  When things are tough you keep going, because Christ walked the path before you and already suffered your pains. All He asks is for you to follow in His footsteps. What greater gift is there than that? I am so grateful for my mission and for the people of this country. I can think of no place I'd rather be right now. The next nine months are going to go so fast and I want to appreciate every second. It's sacred time that you can never get back once it's gone.

It truly is great to be on the Lord's errand. :)

I prossimi nove mesi passeranno in fretta e voglio apprezzarne ogni secondo.

Stranded in the middle of nowhere cuz we got off at the wrong bus stop.

Smiling despite it all because the member we were going to visit came to save us in her car.
