Transfer 4, Week 4

Note: The names of the investigators have been changed

Saturday morning is going to be a NIGHTMARE because transfer calls are upon us. And I'm freaking out already! Gah! I have no clue what's going to happen to me and Sorella Margheriti so I'll just leave that in the Lord's hands and... come what may.
This week was a good one though! Here we go!

Monday: Dinner with the famiglia Calabrese after P-day! There's a fratello from Bari who's been staying with them, his name is Domenico or something...? He was my mom's home teacher back in the day I think. Fun! (Note from mom : I taught him seminary and later he became my home teacher :D) But yeah, the Calabreses are my Rome 5 nonni (grandparents) for sure. It's pretty sweet!

Tuesday: District meeting and then crepes for pranzooo!!! Mine had meat in it. No surprise there. It was delicious. The lady who made them was French and she made us pay a ton but Anziano McClellan is going home this transfer and he has a TON of money saved up in his mission account so he bought all our crepes. There's a reason we all call him McMillionaire, after all. >:)
After that we had English Course and then we went to Mary's house with Sorella Marataro. She told us right off the bat that she's not interested in the Church and that she's satisfied with being Evangelist so that was kinda stinky but... Sorella Marataro was a beast and she bore testimony of the Book of Mormon and told her conversion story! She didn't hold back at all which is awesome cuz she's not a very outspoken person! And Mary didn't talk over her, which she usually does with us, so that was GREAT. And at the end of the lesson Mary gave us strawberries and cream and she accepted the Testimony of Joseph Smith pamphlet. Woohoo! Let's hope it sparks her curiosity.

Wednesday: We saw Rita and Frances before pranzo. Rita is pretty much the same as always so I don't have much to report about her, sadly. But when we got to Frances's house her sister Judith was there and so was Malia! We taught them the Restoration. Malia had read the Restoration pamphlet we'd given her last time and underlined a bunch of things and had lots of questions for us. And Judith immediately understood the need for just one true church! Then she told us that praying is really difficult for her and she's not sure why, she feels like there's a block she can't displace. But she told us that Frances says really great prayers and so Frances closed the lesson praying for us in Ugandan! It was cool even though we couldn't understand anything. The Spirit is the same. :)

Thursday: On this day I learned that I am not in ANY way ready to have kids yet. Hahaha allow me to explain. Sorella Malara, one of our members, invited us to her house to meet one of her friends! Her name is Silvia and Sorella Malara had been meaning for us to meet her for quite some time but Silvia has a new baby so she's been busy. We taught Sorella Malara's daughter and Silvia's daughter English. It was pretty hard... They're both three, they're both named Elena, and they fight every two seconds and it was hard to get them to pay attention BUT we managed to get some English in there. When we left we were super tired. It reminded me of when I'd babysit and go home and fall asleep immediately! So I guess I'm not parent material yet but I'll get there... haha! Anyway, Silvia was really cool. She asked us about our work as missionaries and she was very open and curious and friendly! Sorella Malara was really happy about everything, and at the end we were able to share a brief spiritual thought with them. We should be seeing Silvia and Sorella Malara again this week. :)

Friday: We tried this finding method called gesso, which means chalk in Italian. You get a bedsheet and lay it out on the floor and you write a question on it with chalk and then you put a bunch of Books of Mormon and bigliettini (pass-along cards) around it for people to see when they walk by. For our gesso we wrote, "What makes you happiest?" and then we asked people to write those things down on the bedsheet! It was cool! We didn't stop a ton of people but the anziani stopped a bunch of ragazzi (guys) and even got a phone number! Sorella Margheriti and I talked to a lady named Maria who was really interested in the Church but had a bunch of weird ideas that we didn't understand. She was awesome though. She didn't want to leave us her number so that absolutely stunk. Oh well! She'll remember us on the other side I think!

Also we thought this day was Anziano McClellan's birthday so we called him to sing happy birthday and then we found out it was Anziano McCollaum's birthday, not his... We sang him happy birthday anyway. He laughed really really hard. :)

Saturday: Coolest day of the week in my opinion. Sorella Margheriti and I had other plans for the morning but we both felt that we needed to go to a park in the town a couple train stops from our house and find somebody in particular, but we didn't know who. While we were there we found a woman from Cagliari named Marcella who had been doing a pilgrimage around Italy and we left her the Restoration pamphlet and she told us about her trip! It was a really nice exchange. I hope she gets the chance to go to church and take the missionary lessons when she goes back to Cagliari. But she wasn't the only person we found! There was an old man with his grandchildren at the park who we're friends with and he started talking to us (he's the funniest old guy ever, I LOVE him.). While we were there another old man named Vittorio came over (he'd been talking to a couple Jehovah's Witnesses nearby) and saw our nametags and asked us if we were JWs too so that led to us explaining a bit about who we were. Our old man friend (I feel bad, I can't remember his name.....) left after a while but Vittorio stayed and he asked us to teach him about the Church! So we taught him the Restoration and he accepted the Restoration and Plan of Salvation pamphlets and he told us that he was very interested in what we'd taught him and you could tell he was really happy. Moral of the story is, promptings from the Spirit never steer you wrong. I am so happy we found Vittorio and Marcella when we did. :)

Sunday: We finally saw Alfonso again and this time he brought another friend, Luigi. Luigiknew like nothing about the Church so he didn't say much at the beginning but we ended up giving him the Restoration pamphlet and at a certain point the conversation split so that I was talking toLuigi  and Sorella Margheriti was talking to Alfonso. I asked Luigi to tell me how he joined the Jehovah's Witnesses and that led to a pretty interesting conversation. Every time we quoted something from the Bible to him he would like freak out from happiness, it was pretty funny!! Obviously neither he or Alfonso were willing to accept the Book of Mormon as scripture but I hope someday they'll understand. It was still a good conversation. Luigi couldn't get over the fact that I'm from the States. It was so goofy, he was like, "Heehee you're AMERICAN! And your accent isn't quite Italian but you speak very well." Hahahaha oh man.
So that's all I have to say for this week. The pictures will tell the rest :) Buona settimana a tutti!

                                       TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Sabato: Il giorno piu' forte della settimana secondo me.

Transfer 4, Week 3

Note: The names of the investigators have been changed

How in the world is it ALREADY Monday again?? What the heck. Anyway, this week went a lot better than last week for sure! Here's a summary.

Monday: We went to Mamma's house with the anziani and kept her company since she wasn't going in to work that day. Sorella Margheriti cut the anziani's hair and I helped Mamma with some laundry. It was really chill. We love our Mamma to death. :)

Tuesday: District meeting like every Tuesday! We went to a kebab place and got pizza for lunch. A couple of the anziani were gone doing scambi but they came back after lunch so we met up with them at the train station. Anziano Gay and Anziano Garrett got lost in Rome without a phone and they had to do a crazy sprint to catch the train back home. Hahaha!!

When we got back we did our English course and taught a lesson to Rita. We've been sorta debating on whether we should still teach her or not... as usual. But in this lesson we found out that she hasn't been coming to church with us because she has some responsibilities in her church so she's waiting for someone to take her place. Hmm... So I guess we're going to keep trying with her for now. It's a bit of a battle between letting her go and supporting her as much as we can. For now we're just gonna keep visiting her less often.

Wednesday: Pass-off lesson with the anziani! A lady from Uganda named Frances walked up to them last week and asked if she could come to church with them and turns out she's really interested in the gospel. The anziani gave her to us as a referral so we went to her house and taught her the Plan of Salvation. We have no idea how old she is but she looks like she's 25 and she is absolutely gorgeous and has a quiet voice and is so friendly!!! And she loves being taught. We were soooo stoked to teach her.

After that lesson Sorella Margheriti and I headed to Rome 1 to do some scambi. I did my first scambio with Sorella Arnold (she took Sorella Marsh's place in Rome 1 as a Sister Leader, or STL) and it was awesome!! We went to this giant cemetery right across from the train station in Rome with a member from Rome 1 named Barbara. She went to visit her friend Alessandro's grave with his mom. We were there as moral support.

So, of course I have to make a fool of myself in serious situations, as always... We were standing in front of the grave quietly contemplating it when a big fat mosquito decided to take a bite out of my shin and when I looked down and saw it I instinctively decimated it with the palm of my hand... and not only did it make a loud noise, I got blood ALL over my hand and it was literally the most disgusting thing ever and suddenly Alessandro's mom and Barbara were searching frantically for a tissue and I was trying not to imagine whose blood I had on my bare skin and... it was just... embarrassing. But goofy! Hahaha oh man. Che figuretta. Anyway, before we left the cemetery we left Alessandro's mom an opuscolo (brochure) explaining the Plan of Salvation. Barbara had also said a beautiful prayer to invite the Spirit to our little gathering and you could tell Alessandro's mom had felt something. She accepted the brochure and thanked us for coming. And the crazy thing is this: I accidentally had taken that brochure home with me during our last scambio with the Rome 1 sorelle (it had their number stamped on it and everything) but that morning before leaving I remembered to take it back and turns out I needed it! That was a small miracle but a miracle nonetheless. I hope Alessandro's mom read it. :)

Also, I found out that one of Sorella Arnold's friends back home (England) has been to my house for dinner with some of the other missionaries in Boston!! Che giro!! He's home now. And Sorella Arnold is going home this month along with a BUNCH of anziani. She's the only sorella who's leaving so... I think their last night at the villa is gonna be a bit of a frat party this transfer. Hahahaha

Thursday/Friday: Scambio with Sorella Jones! She is my scambio buddy for LIFE. We've done so many together it's not even funny! I love her so much. We visited a less-active and taught some English to one of the members and after that we talked to Fratello Montesano in church and he told us how to make matriciana! He called it something weird in romano but I don't remember what it was... He also left us some pizza. It wasn't super good but hey, it's the thought that counts. :D Also for lunch Sorella Cano made ground beef with a ton of super yummy stuff in it... It's the South American blood.

Saturday: SICK LESSON WITH FRANCES. We met her daughter Malia! She's ten years old and she is a sweetheart! We read the introduction to the Book of Mormon together and they both asked some really good questions. There was a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere. While we were teaching I felt the Spirit bringing us together as friends even though we've just met them. It was almost indescribable, but let's just say that after that lesson my companion and I felt very uplifted and hopeful for the eternal progression of this amazing family! Frances wants us to teach her sister as well! We're so excited to work with this family!!! What a blessing. We left that lesson flying high, for real. :o)

That night we went to Rome 2 for the pre-stake conference! We saw lots of missionaries and heard some great talks. The downside was that all the missionaries had to go upstairs and watch the conference on TV because the room downstairs wasn't big enough. Bummer. Also it was really hot and I'm starting to feel like I'm slowly going to die of heat exhaustion this summer. Bring it on Italy.

Sunday: Stake confereeeence! The Church rented a conference hall in a super nice hotel in Rome and it was a bit like being at General Conference because there was a balcony up top with giant screens on the walls so we could see who was talking down below. Marta was there and so was Maddalena, one of the anziani's investigators! After that we went to Mamma Gigante's house to have lunch together and... SKYPE WITH OUR FAMILIIIIEEEES FOR MOTHER'S DAY!!!!! It was SO FREAKIN AWESOOOOOME!!!! The mission seriously makes you realize how much you love your family. It was so good to see them again. And I noticed how much better my Italian has gotten here because it was a lot easier for me to communicate properly. That's always a plus. :D

It's pretty weird to think that this transfer is already half over... We have no idea what to expect for the next one. I sincerely hope that the Lord sees fit to leave Sorella Margheriti here for her last transfer. I would love to stay here with her (we've become like real sisters, it's hard to imagine not being there for her anymore!) but if the Lord has other plans for me, I'll accept them. In the meantime I'll take full advantage of this transfer with Sorella Margheriti. She's one of those people that you just know will be your best friend long after the mission. It's not easy to find people like her. :)

Well, I hope all of you are enjoying life and living it to the fullest cuuuz... I know I am! Buona settimana a tutti e ci sentiamo alla prossima!

                                       TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Abbiamo piu' o meno discusso se dobbiamo ancora insegnare a lei oppure no...come sempre.

Mercoledi': Lezione passata dagli anziani! Eravamo li' come supporto morale.
E' tornato a casa ora.

Sabato: LEZIONE INCREDIBILE CON FRANCES.
