Transfer 11, Week 2

Note: The names of the investigators have been changed

This week was RIDDLED with miracles! I could tell of many but I'll limit myself to this one. So my whole mission I've struggled with mustering up the courage to talk to ragazzi (young people) and yet I love doing it. They're special people living in the middle of a lot of confusion and they need what we have. Anyway, just last night Sorella Bicchierri and I had gone to look for the address of a contact from a couple weeks ago. Turns out it was the wrong address. We were a little discouraged, yet hopeful to find someone to talk to while we were there. We went to the bus stop and saw a boy our age leaning against a pole. He was really bundled up and didn't look like he wanted to talk to anyone. We also may or may not have seen him participate in a drug deal right there on the street corner... So I had a lot of reasons to not even try to talk to him. But I looked at my companion and I looked at him and I just knew very strongly that I NEEDED to talk to him, and that if I didn't I would have passed up a very important chance to share the gospel. I had no idea what I was doing. I felt like I was learning how to dive into a swimming pool for the first time - it's scary going head first but if you don't try, you'll never know how to do it. I had a picture of the Salt Lake temple in my pocket with the Church website on the back. I went up to this boy and I asked if I could leave him the card, after which he took it and told me he was atheist. I asked him why. And that started a conversation of maybe five minutes, in which I found out some cool things about himself and his family. But the best part was bearing him a small but powerful testimony that I know for myself that God is there and that he can find out for himself. He was listening, I knew it. And I wasn't afraid! Then our bus came and we said goodbye and he let us get on the bus first. We were deeply in awe of those small but precious minutes with this stranger who, in fact, had talked to the anziani just this last summer and recognized our name tags. Every exposure to the gospel contributes to saving a soul. And I'm so glad I had the courage to be a part of it! I'm probably never going to see that boy again in this life but I hope he's a step closer to Christ than he was before.

Just kidding, I remembered one more miracle. I went to Sassari with Sorella Hamilton for a scambio with the sorelle there and on Wednesday I went on splits with Sorella Moro, Sorella Littlefield's greenie from Costa Rica. We were supposed to see an investigator named Mariella but when we got to her house she had to leave for an appointment. But her daughter, Carla, and Carla's boyfriend Davide were there, and Mariella said we could stay with them. We talked and got to know them, and then they started asking us questions about our missions -what we do during the day, why we came, what it's like to leave home behind - it was really cool. They didn't know anything about the church at all, so their questions were really innocent. :) Then Sorella Moro decided to show them the video "He Lives"(our church released this video for Easter last year, here's the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZqTRSVA1YA). It brought a very sweet spirit into the room. We bore testimony of the Savior and of the potential God sees in Carla and Davide. We could tell they were feeling the Spirit, and it was so incredibly strong!!! I have to say that was honestly one of the most powerful lessons I've ever taught on my mission. They were excited to see us again (I was sad because I'll probably never see them again) and I managed to snag a picture before I left. What a memorable night. Sorella Moro and I were indescribably happy.:)

We have five (yeah, you heard right!) teenage girls who want to learn more about the gospel and have set up appointments with them for this week! Three of them were passed off to us by the anziani and two are friends of a girl we used to teach. We also met with Annalisa and had a good talk with her about her plans for getting baptized. She still hasn't come to church so we're working on developing a better support system to help her make that super important step. There's a young women's activity this Saturday that might help her out...

I noticed I was a lot more hopeful this past week compared to the last one. Sure, we've dropped a lot of people and it's been hard, but Sorella Bicchierri is full of ideas and she's whipping me into shape. It's easy to develop lazy habits in the mission with the passing of time, but when you have a companion who keeps you on your toes and the humility to change, miracles happen. We're meeting lots of new people and getting better at just talking to them. They need to develop trust in us! We're learning so much! The more you try, the better you get at it.

Last thing, we went on a hike today with a member's cousin, who actually isn't a member of the church and is so sweet! The view was INCREDIBLE. We sat on a ledge eating sandwiches and I played a couple songs off the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack as we looked out at the ocean. It was sweet. Italy is a piece of heaven on earth, let me tell ya.

Love my mission, love life. The Church is true!

Transfer 11, Week 1

Note: The names of the investigators have been changed

Transfer 11?? That just feels weird to write. I'm old... Haha!

I saw a lot of change this week in my new companion! Before all else I have to say that I am so proud of her. She's still adjusting but visibly getting lost in the work! We talk openly and often about how she's feeling and what we can do to improve, and this has been so beneficial to our companionship. I can almost feel the trust and friendship between us growing, every single day! She's a fantastic teacher, so very diligent, and obedient. I couldn't have asked for anyone better this transfer. :)

We had an interesting week for sure. The results aren't as good as I expected them to be due to unforeseen circumstances and lack of interest from a couple investigators, but we've been talking to people! Lots of them! I haven't talked to this many people on the streets since I was training last. Sorella Bicchierri has no qualms about stopping people. She's good at it and I'm the one who's better at keeping up the conversation. So it works. One man we spoke to this week really stood out to me. Initially we had asked him about genealogy but he wasn't interested. Instead of walking away we asked him if he'd talked to the missionaries before, and that started a conversation where he explained to us that he doesn't believe in God and that, according to him, Jesus Christ never really existed. We were getting into the thick of his train of thought when his wife and daughter walked out of the shop next to us, so he saluted us and walked away before we could say much else. And then, to our surprise, a few feet up the street his wife and daughter went into another shop! We went right up to him and Sorella Bicchierri told him she felt that she should invite him to pray, just to ask God if He's there. And he said yes!! We left him with a temple card. He doesn't know what the purpose of our existence is or who put us here, but it was undeniable that we saw a change in his attitude in the few minutes we were speaking to him. The Lord guides us to those who are open in heart. :)

I have to admit, I've been pretty frustrated with our current investigators lately. There are a couple who are totally able to be baptized but don't seem to care about keeping their commitments. But there comes a point where you need to be really clear with people and explain what your purpose is as a missionary. So a lot of that is going to happen this week. And in the meantime we're working hard to find the Lord's elect – those who are looking for the truth and don't know where to find it. If this work were easy it wouldn't be worth it. We were taking about adversity in Relief Society yesterday and it was said that sometimes the Lord allows some doors to close in order to open better ones. And we don't have to fear in the meantime because His grace will make up for our weaknesses, as long as we're willing to work for it.

I'm learning much more than I expected this transfer. It's been a process, but I'm looking forward to the future with a brightness of hope. :)
