Transfer 10, Week 6

Our work gave us a basketful of surprises this week! I'm going to start with Elisa and Barbara. We've started teaching Barbara English (she's six years old) and this was our second week so we had a goal to share a spiritual thought at the end and see what effect it would have on Elisa (Barbara's mom). Turns out Elisa had a class and couldn't be there but her mom, Maria, was there. When we came in the house Maria told us she had met some anziani last summer!! I don't think she had realized last time that we were from the same church because she seemed really closed off when we first met her. This time she was really open and happy to see us. While we were teaching Barbara a man walked in the kitchen and started talking to us in perfect English. Much to our surprise it was Barbara's dad. Barbara's parents aren't together anymore and we weren't sure how often she saw her dad so it was nice to see that he's still in her life. We found out that Barbara's dad (Sergio) speaks a lot of languages because he works at the airport and get this: he saw a picture we had of Anziano Pingree and Anziano Flynn (the two assistants) with our district from when they came to Cagliari last week and told us he had talked to them at the airport! He also has met President and Sorella Waddoups and said they were both very refined and polite, as are all the Mormons he has met. Well go figure :) It is NO coincidence at all that the people in this family have met so many members of the Church. Before leaving we showed them a Mormon Message and at the end Maria started asking a TON of questions about what we believe. Just wow wow wow, that's all I can say about that night. I love this little family so much and I hardly know them. I think the Lord has a lot of blessings in store for them...

Next big thing was the gesso we had just a couple nights ago. Sorella Rossi and I felt impressed to organize one with the other missionaries because (not so coincidentally, as we were about to find out) all the appointments we wanted to have that night had to be moved. We were just about to finish for the night when a group of three ragazzi started talking to us and a minute later another group of boys came up to our gesso! These last few recognized our name tags because two of them (Davide and Pierpaolo) did an exchange in Utah and Idaho so not only was their English perfect (their friends spoke really well too), they knew a LOT about the Church! They're all 19 years old but you could hardly tell because they were so mature about it. They're interested in English course so we're hoping for them to turn out like Annalisa, our 17-year-old investigator who also got to know the Church through an exchange in Idaho and wants to be baptized... The Lord puts people in the right place at the right time for His wise purposes. And that night he sent those boys to our gesso to get them in contact with the Church again! And their friends as well. It was so so so cool. I hope we'll see them again so the anziani can get to work with them.

Annalisa is still determined to wait to be baptized until she turns 18 in March. We tried talking about it when we saw her on Saturday. It seems like she hasn't found the right moment to sit down with her parents and talk it out. She doesn't come to church because she doesn't want to bother her parents that early in the morning and because her mom would get really nervous about her going around town on the buses that early by herself. So we offered to come pick her up and pointed out that coming to church now will prepare her parents for when she'll become a member of the Church. She thought it over and then said she has a lot of homework. Luckily Sorella Rossi had the same problem before the mission, so she was able to clearly explain that maybe you can't always finish all your homework by Saturday night, but you can certainly pray for the Lord to bless you for taking three hours out of your morning to go to church instead of staying home to do your work. She said when we put the Lord first everything else falls into place. That's one of the things that's hardest for our investigators to understand. If you're straight up with people, promise blessings, and invite them to act, they become responsible to see if those promises are true. Clarity is everything. Annalisa told us she wouldn't be able to come this weekend but we are going to push her a little harder now that this has come out in the open. We also talked about the parable of the sower in the New Testament, after which she told us that she knows there are more things she should be doing to keep her soil fertile for seeds of the gospel. Amazing! Small steps. She's got a good head on her shoulders and I'm grateful.

A lot of investigators and less-actives came to church this week!!! It was really cool. Our ward has started a 21-day missionary program that we've been fasting every weekend for and the members are all on board, so we're already seeing results. Faith is power. It gets underestimated all too often, but this transfer I've really been learning what it means to have faith, how to make it grow, and what happens when you actually trust in the Lord. In this world it's easy to doubt, call it realism, and get praise for it. What people don't realize is that being cynical is the easy road and it never did anyone any good. Choosing to believe is hard, but the results have eternal value. So I choose to believe, and I know the miracles we've been blessed to see are the fruits of that. This Church is true! God still speaks to us and He's still there. Nothing's changed, it's just us that have forgotten about Him. I'm so grateful for this responsibility I have to teach people about Christ and remind them that life does have a purpose, that there are more blessings to be had if we will accept to do what the Lord requires of us.

  NOTA: I nomi dei simpatizzanti  sono stati cambiati.

Il nostro lavoro ci ha dato una caterva di sorprese questa settimana! Comincero' con Elisa e Barbara. Abbiamo iniziato a insegnare inglese a Barbara (ha sei anni) e questa e' stata la nostra seconda settimana cosi' avevamo l'obiettivo di condividere un pensiero spirituale alla fine e di vedere che effetto avrebbe avuto su Elisa (la mamma di Barbara). E' venuto fuori pero' che Elisa doveva fare una classe e non poteva esserci ma c'era sua madre, Maria. Quando siamo arrivate Maria ci ha detto che aveva incontrato alcuni anziani la scorsa estate!! Non penso che aveva capito la volta scorsa che noi apparteniamo alla stessa chiesa perche' ci e' sembrata molto chiusa la prima volta che ci siamo viste. Questa volta e' stata molto aperta e felice di vederci. Mentre stavamo insegnando a Barbara un uomo e' entrato nella cucina e ha cominciato a parlare con noi in perfetto inglese. Con grande sorpresa da parte nostra era il padre di Barbara. I genitori di Barbara non stanno piu' insieme e non eravamo sicure di quanto spesso vedesse suo padre cosi' e' stato bello vedere che e' ancora presente nella sua vita. Abbiamo scoperto che il padre di Barbara (Sergio) parla diverse lingue perche' lavora all'aereoporto e da notare : ha visto una foto che avevamo di Anziano Pingree e di Anziano Flynn (i due assistenti) con il nostro distretto di quando sono venuti a Cagliari la scorsa settimana e ci ha detto di aver parlato con loro all'aereoporto! Ha incontrato anche il Presidente e Sorella Waddoups e ci ha detto che erano entrambi molto raffinati e gentili, come lo sono tutti i Mormoni che ha incontrato. Bene, andatelo ad immaginare :) NON e' una coincidenza che tutte le persone di questa famiglia abbiano incontrato tanti membri della Chiesa. Prima di andarcene abbiamo mostrato un Messaggio Mormone e alla fine Maria ha preso a farci TANTE domande su cio' che crediamo. Proprio incredibile, e' tutto cio' che posso dire riguardo a quella sera. Amo questa famigliola tanto anche se li conosco a stento. Penso che il Signore abbia tante benedizioni in serbo per loro...

L'altra grossa cosa e' stato il gesso di un paio di sere fa. Io e Sorella Rossi abbiamo avuto la sensazione di organizzarne uno con gli altri missionari perche' (non cosi' a caso, come abbiamo potuto constatare) abbiamo dovuto spostare tutti gli appuntamenti che volevamo avere quella sera. Stavamo quasi per finire quella sera quando un gruppo  di tre ragazzi ha cominciato a parlare con noi e un minuto dopo un altro gruppo di ragazzi si e' avvicinato al nostro gesso! Questi ultimi hanno riconosciuto le targhette perche' due di loro (Davide e Pierpaolo) hanno fatto uno scambio studentesco nello Utah e nell'Idaho cosi' non solo il loro inglese era perfetto (anche i loro amici parlavano benissimo) ma sapevano UN SACCO della chiesa! Avevano tutti 19 anni ma lo si poteva capire a stento perche' erano tutti cosi' maturi. Sono interessati al corso di inglese cosi' speriamo che possano diventare come Annalisa, la nostra simpatizzante diciasettenne che ha anche conosciuto la chiesa durante uno scambio nell'Idaho e vuole essere battezzata... Il Signore mette le persone nel posto giusto al momento giusto per i Suoi saggi scopi. E quella sera ha mandato questi ragazzi al nostro gesso per metterli di nuovo in contatto con la Chiesa! E anche i loro amici. E' stato cosi' forte. Spero di vederli di nuovo cosi' gli anziani possono lavorare con loro.

Annalisa e' ancora intenzionata ad aspettare ad essere battezzata finche' non compie 18 anni a marzo. Abbiamo cercato di parlarne quando l'abbiamo vista sabato. Sembra che non abbia trovato il momento giusto per sedersi con i suoi genitori e di parlarne. Non viene in chiesa perche' non vuole dare fastidio ai suoi genitori cosi' presto di mattina e perche' sua madre si innervosirebbe troppo se lei andasse in giro per la citta' di prima mattina da sola sugli autobus. Cosi' ci siamo offerte di andare a  prenderla e le abbiamo fatto notare che venire in chiesa ora avrebbe preparato i suoi genitori per quando sarebbe diventata un membro della Chiesa. Ci ha pensato sopra e poi ha detto che ha un sacco di compiti da fare. Fortunatamente Sorella Rossi ha avuto lo stesso problema prima della missione cosi' ha potuto spiegarle chiaramente che forse uno non puo' sempre finire tutti i compiti il  sabato sera ma che si puo' sicuramente pregare il Signore di essere benedetti per aver dedicato tre ore della mattina per andare in chiesa invece che di stare a casa a fare il proprio lavoro. Ha detto che quando mettiamo il Signore al primo posto tutto il resto viene da se'. Questa e' una delle cose piu' difficili da capire per i nostri simpatizzanti. Se si e' diretti con le persone, se si promettono le benedizioni e se si invitano le persone ad agire, diventano responsabili da se stessi di vedere se queste promesse sono vere. La chiarezza e' tutto. Annalisa ci ha detto che non sarebbe potuta venire questo fine settimana ma la motiveremo un po' di piu' ora che questa questione e' venuta all'aperto. Abbiamo anche parlato della parabola del mietitore del Nuovo Testamento, dopo di cui ci ha detto che sa che ci sono piu' cose che dovrebbe fare per mantenere il suo suolo fertile ai semi del vangelo. Sorprendente! Piccoli passi. Ha la testa sulle spalle e ne sono grata.

Un sacco di simpatizzanti e di membri meno attivi sono venuti in chiesa questa settimana!!! E' stato molto speciale. Il nostro rione ha cominciato un programma missionario di 21 giorni in cui digiuniamo ogni fine settimana e tutti i membri ne sono partecipi cosi' stiamo vedendo i risultati. Fede e' potere. Viene sottovalutata troppo spesso ma in questo trasferimento ho proprio imparato cosa significa avere fede, come farla sviluppare e cosa succede quando si confida veramente nel Signore. In questo mondo e' facile dubitare, chiamatelo realismo e si viene lodati per questo. Quello che la gente non capisce e' che essere cinici e' la strada piu' facile e non ha mai giovato a nessuno. Scegliere di credere e' difficile ma i risultati hanno un valore eterno. Cosi' io scelgo di credere e so che i miracoli che siamo stati benedetti di vedere ne sono il frutto. Questa Chiesa e' vera! Dio ci parla ancora ed e' ancora li'. Non e' cambiato niente, siamo noi che Lo abbiamo dimenticato. Sono cosi' grata per questa responsabilita' che ho di insegnare alla gente di Cristo e di ricordare a loro che la vita ha uno scopo, che ci sono molte piu' benedizioni in serbo per noi se accetteremo di fare cio' che il Signore ci richiede.

Transfer 10, Week 5

This week was quite out of the ordinary... I've never dropped so many investigators at once!!! Normally you'd think that's demoralizing but they were all people who were no longer progressing or hadn't been for a while so we did some... housecleaning. The Lord is leaving room for new investigators and we have several potentials that I love with all my heart, so my faith is strong!

Laura told us over text that she'd decided not to study with us anymore but didn't tell us why so the whole situation is just weird. Best left alone I suppose. It's too bad, but the moment isn't right. I hope she'll have the opportunity to be baptized someday.

We did, however, meet with two ex-investigators the sorelle here taught a while back. One of them, Valeria, is our age and seems really intrigued by temples and eternal families, as well as the law of chastity. In the past she didn't want to get involved with our church and that's why the sorelle dropped her. According to the teaching record the sorelle left she was taught the first three lessons, so maybe she needs a different topic right now. She's so open and has a great personality so I'd like to see her become a progressing investigator. Praying hard!

The other ex-investigator is Sonia. She has been meeting with the missionaries for a long time! At least five years, maybe even ten. She found out she had breast cancer last year and with all the treatments and things going on she couldn't meet with the sorelle anymore. But she accepted to have us over and it went so well!!!! She has amazingly high moral standards and has come to comprehend a lot about life and God since she got cancer. She's healing well and it's almost gone, so she has a lot of hope and knows everything will work out the way God wants it to. We met her son and his girlfriend while we were over and she has a husband too. Our end goal is to teach all of them!

One awesome thing that happened this week: we started teaching the Plan of Salvation to a class of men between the ages of 20 and 60 at a night school!! We have a friend, Mario, who has known the missionaries since 1985 and teaches English at a night school for people who never graduated high school. We've been helping him teach so as we taught this week we asked the class "deep questions" like "What's the purpose of life?" and "What are your plans for the future?" and "What's your biggest dream?" But the last one was "Where do we go after we die?" Several guys answered "underground" and started laughing. Then someone said nowhere, others said heaven, someone said hell. And then one of them asked, "What do YOU think?" We ended up drawing a simplified map of the Plan of Salvation and then the questions started coming like bullets! One man in particular seemed super interested. He's married and believes in God so I sense a family of potential investigators here... The others are all single but some were really curious. Next week we're going to teach them the whole Plan of Salvation and I can't wait because it's going to be craaaazy! If it works out the anziani will be getting a lot of new investigators in the coming weeks. :)

Last big thing: a couple of our members here (Betty and Mauro) got married this weekend and a TON of nonmember friends and family showed up! A lot of them were crying during the ceremony. Sorella Chandler and I did a piano-violin duet together and they cried during that too so I think the Spirit was working pretty hard. :) And the next day the bride's less-active sister's husband and two daughters came to church for the first time at least since I've been here, so that was an amazing surprise! I don't know why his wife didn't show up... Small steps I guess. The other sorelle are working with them so I'm sure they're helping a lot!

Once again I have written a novel, so thank you for surviving up until this point. :) I hope everyone's week is fantastic and as full of miracles as can be!

Questa settimana e' stata proprio inconsueta... Non ho mai lasciato tanti simpatizzanti contemporaneamente!!!! Di solito uno penserebbe che questo sia demoralizzante ma queste erano tutte persone che non stavano progredendo o che non lo avevano fatto da un po' cosi' abbiamo fatto un po' di ... pulizia. Il Signore sta lasciando spazio a nuovi simpatizzanti e abbiamo diversi potenziali che amo con tutto il cuore, cosi' la mia fede e' forte!

Laura ci ha detto in un text che ha deciso che non vuole studiare piu' con noi ma non ci ha detto perche', cosi' tutta la situazione e' proprio strana. E' meglio lasciarla stare, credo. E' un peccato, ma il momento non e' proprio quello giusto. Spero che avra' l'opportunita' di essere battezzata un giorno.

Comunque abbiamo incontrato due ex-simpatizzanti  a cui le sorelle hanno insegnato parecchio tempo fa. Una di loro, Valeria, ha la nostra eta' e sembra molto interessata dai templi e dalle famiglie eterne e anche dalla legge della castita'. In passato non aveva voluto avere molto a che fare con la nostra chiesa ed e' per questo che le sorelle l'hanno lasciata. Secondo i registri che le sorelle hanno lasciato le sono state insegnate le prime tre lezioni, cosi' forse ha bisogno di qualche altro argomento ora. E' cosi' aperta ed ha una grande personalita', per questo vorrei vederla diventare una simpatizzante che progredisce. Prego tanto!

L'altra ex simpatizzante e' Elisa. Si e' vista con le missionarie per cosi' tanto tempo! Almeno cinque anni, forse anche dieci. Ha scoperto di avere il cancro al seno lo scorso anno e con tutte le cure e tutto cio' che stava succedendo non ha potuto incontrarsi piu' con le sorelle. Ma ha acconsentito a farci andare da lei ed e' andata cosi' bene!!!! Ha dei valori morali cosi' elevati ed e' giunta a comprendere cosi' tanto della vita e di Dio da quando ha avuto il cancro. Sta guarendo e il cancro e' quasi andato via cosi' ha molta speranza e sa che tutto andra'  secondo la volonta' di Dio. Abbiamo incontrato suo figlio e la sua ragazza mentre eravamo li' ed ha anche un marito. Il nostro obiettivo e' di poter insegnare a tutti loro!

Una cosa straordinaria che e' accaduta questa settimana: abbiamo cominciato a insegnare il Piano di Salvezza ad una classe di uomini tra i 20 e i 60 anni ad una scuola serale!!!! Abbiamo un amico, Mario, che conosce i missionari dal 1985 e che insegna inglese ad una scuola serale per persone che non si sono mai diplomate. Lo abbiamo aiutato ad insegnare cosi' mentre stavamo insegnando questa settimana abbiamo fatto alla classe delle domande "profonde" del tipo " Qual e' lo scopo della vita?" e "Quali sono i tuoi piani per il futuro?" e " Qual e' il tuo piu' grande sogno?" Ma l'ultima e' stata " Dove andiamo dopo che moriamo?" Diversi di loro hanno risposto " Sottoterra"e hanno cominciato a ridere. Poi alcuni hanno detto da nessuna parte, altri hanno detto in cielo, qualcuno ha detto in inferno. E poi uno di loro ha chiesto, "Cosa TU pensi?" Abbiamo finito con il disegnare un diagramma semplificato del Piano di Salvezza e poi le domande sono arrivate come dei proiettili! Un uomo in particolare sembrava superinteressato. E' sposato e crede in Dio cosi' percepisco una famiglia di potenziali simpatizzanti qui... Gli altri sono tutti celibi ma alcuni erano davvero incuriositi. La prossima settimana insegneremo a loro l'intero Piano di Salvezza e non vedo l'ora perche' sara' pazzesco!!!! Se funziona gli anziani avranno un sacco di nuovi simpatizzanti nelle prossime settimane. :)

Ultima cosa importante: una coppia di membri qui (Betty e Mauro) si sono sposati questo fine settimana e un SACCO di amici non membri e familiari sono venuti! Molti hanno pianto durante la cerimonia. Io e Sorella Chandler abbiamo fatto un duetto al piano-violino insieme e hanno pianto anche allora cosi' credo che lo Spirito abbia lavorato molto. :) E il giorno dopo sono venuti in chiesa il marito della sorella meno attiva della sposa con le due figlie per la prima volta almeno da quando sono qui, cosi' quella e' stata una grande sorpresa! Non so perche' la moglie non sia venuta.. Piccoli passi, credo. Le altre sorelle stanno lavorando con loro cosi' sono sicura che aiutano tanto!

Ancora una volta ho scritto un romanzo, cosi' grazie per essere sopravvissuti fino a questo punto. :) Spero che la vostra settimana sara' fantastica e piena di tanti miracoli!
