Transfer 10, Week 4

This week was full of miracles and little surprises. As usual, we are so blessed! The first miracle is Laura. She has a baptismal date for February 13th!!! She accepted it with such a willing heart! We were able to have a member, Sandra, at that lesson, and she quickly became good friends with Laura! The whole situation is reminding me a LOT of Franca (my first baptism when I was in Rome 5 almost a year ago now). We're still figuring out a way for Laura to get to church from where she lives and praying hard for the Lord's hand in it. It's a struggle but I know everything is going to work out. I haven't seen someone so eager to be baptized in a very long time.

The next two little miracles are Elisa and Barbara, a mother and her six-year-old that we met just this Saturday! They're friends of a guy named Mario who has known and adored the missionaries since 1985 (don't know why he's not baptized, he knows so much he could be a member) and talks about them to EVERYONE, so he's basically a potential investigator factory, haha. Mario teaches at a night school for people who never graduated high school. We just resumed teaching English to his two classes this Friday. Mario invited us to his aunt's 85th birthday party the following night so we went and that was where we met Elisa and Barbara! They want us to help them with their English (they know a lot!!) but we felt really strongly that they need the gospel, so we're praying hard that they'll accept the missionary lessons as well. Barbara is a little bouncing ball, she's so spunky! :) And we told Elisa she looks a lot like Jennifer Lopez because it's true. She was really flattered. We can't wait to meet with them!

One of our potential investigators, Marina, has this insane 200-page thesis paper about China that she needs to translate (at least part of it) from Italian to English so we're helping her with that. It's quite the task but it's actually pretty fun when you do it with someone else! Also, when we met with her this week we asked if she'd like to take the missionary lessons to learn more about our church and she was totally down. She's super smart and super open and she's only 30 years old. I love her!!

A couple in our ward is getting married this Saturday so Sorella Chandler and I have been preparing a musical number, me on the piano and her on the violin. It's going to be sooo fuuuun!!! I've always wanted to go to a wedding on my mission!!!

Aside from that we met with a couple awesome potentials and contacted some old investigators who would like to meet with us! We're seeing one of them tonight. She's 22! I'm excited! And praying that she'll want to keep meeting with us.

Basically, the work has been picking up fast since the holidays ended.

It's so great to be in Cagliari!

Questa settimana e' stata piena di miracoli e di piccole sorprese. Come al solito siamo cosi' benedette! Il primo miracolo e' Laura. Ha una data per il suo battesimo il 13 febbraio!!! Lo ha accettato tanto di buon cuore! Abbiamo portato un membro con noi, Sandra, a quella lezione ed e' diventata subito amica di Laura! Tutta questa situazione mi ricorda TANTO Franca ( il mio primo battesimo quando stavo a Roma 5 quasi un anno fa). Stiamo ancora cercando un modo per portare Laura in chiesa da dove abita e stiamo pregando tanto che il Signore ci dia una mano. E' difficile ma so che tutto si mettera' a posto. Non vedevo una persona cosi' desiderosa di essere battezzata da tanto tempo.

Gli altri due piccoli miracoli sono Elisa e Barbara, una madre e la sua bambina di sei anni che abbiamo appena incontrato questo sabato! Sono amiche di un uomo che che si chiama Mario che conosce e adora i missionari dal 1985 (non so perche' non sia stato ancora battezzato, sa cosi' tanto che potrebbe essere un membro) e parla di loro con TUTTI, cosi' in pratica e' una potenziale fabbrica di simpatizzanti, ahah. Mario insegna in una scuola serale di recupero per persone che non si sono mai diplomate. Abbiamo appena ripreso a insegnare inglese nelle sue due classi  lo scorso venerdi'. Mario ci ha invitate all'85-esimo compleanno di sua zia la sera seguente e noi ci siamo andate ed e' li' che abbiamo incontrato Elisa e Barbara! Vogliono che le aiutiamo con il loro inglese (lo conoscono un sacco!!) ma abbiamo sentito molto forte che hanno bisogno del Vangelo, cosi' stiamo pregando tanto che accettino anche le lezioni missionarie. Barbara e' come una pallina che rimbalza, e' cosi' sfacciata! :) E abbiamo detto a Elisa che assomiglia un sacco a Jennifer Lopez perche' e' vero. Era davvero lusingata. Non vediamo l'ora di incontrarle!

Uno dei nostri potenziali simpatizzanti, Marina, ha questa insana tesi di 200 pagine sulla Cina che ha bisogno di tradurre (almeno in parte) dall'italiano all'inglese e cosi' la stiamo aiutando. E' davvero un impegno ma e' in realta' divertente quando lo si fa con qualcun altro! Inoltre quando ci siamo incontrate questa settimana le abbiamo chiesto se le sarebbe piaciuto prendere le lezioni missionarie per imparare di piu' sulla chiesa ed e' stata completamente disponibile. E' super intelligente e molto aperta e ha solo 30 anni. L'adoro!!!

Una coppia del nostro rione si sposera' questo sabato cosi' io e Sorella Chandler stiamo preparando un numero musicale, io al piano e lei al violino. Sara' cosi' divertente!!!!!!!! Ho sempre voluto andare a un matrimonio durante la mia missione!!!

A parte cio' abbiamo incontrato una coppia di splendidi potenziali simpatizzanti e ne abbiamo contattato alcuni di vecchia data che vorrebbero incontrarci! Ne vedremo uno stasera. Ha 22 anni! Sono emozionata! E stiamo anche pregando che vorra' continuare a vederci.

In pratica il lavoro e' ripreso a spron battuto dalla fine delle feste.
E' cosi' bello stare a Cagliari!

Transfer 10, Week 3

I'm really pleased with the amount of work that got done this week. We've been working a lot with our less-actives more than I have in my other areas, which is great because I used to have no idea of how to act around them! While I would love to see them come back to church, I've realized that ours are not in a state of mind and spirit where they would accept to do that. It's hard to accept, but I hope the lessons we teach and the Spirit will prepare them for when they will be ready to come back.

We had an interesting experience with Carla this week. We had just started teaching her about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and were reading about baptism in 2 Nephi 31 when her son, Michele, came back from a coffee run for his mom. (He's 16 years old.) He was about to go upstairs to his room when I blurted out, "Would you like to read with us?" I almost didn't say it but I thought of the scripture that says "for I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ."(Romans 1:16) Carla's kids might as well know firsthand what she's been doing with us. And to our surprise, he shrugged his shoulders and sat down! Carla laughed and said we were dealing with a hardcore Catholic and we calmly responded that we were only here to share what we knew. We continued to read from 2 Nephi 31 and finished the lesson. Michele asked a lot of questions and was very polite. Before we left he thanked us twice (I don't know what for but it was nice)! He may not become an investigator while we're here but I know the Lord gave him a chance that night. :)

Luisa came to church this Sunday but we didn't count it on our numbers because she missed sacrament meeting. She did make it to Gospel Principles though!!! She's never come that early because she's always busy but this time she gave something up to come! That is a big step for her. We talked about baptism with her this week and she said she wants to be baptized but she has this fear that she won't be able to keep the commandments afterwards. She has a bit of a problem with being afraid of unforeseen circumstances so we're working hard to teach her what it means to be able to choose and set priorities.

We also went to visit a woman named Laura, who called us during the feste (Holidays) and said she absolutely has to get baptized. That was a total shocker! She's been reading the Book of Mormon and has found a lot of scriptures about baptism that she knows she was led by God to read. This is the problem though... She used to live in Cagliari,which is how the sorelle found her, but she had a fight with the woman who was hosting her and had to go back to her old house. Which is 66 km (41 miles) from Cagliari. It takes us two hours to get there by bus and train so it's a bit of a struggle for us and there's no way for her to get to church because transportation for Cagliari is rare where she lives. It's a tough situation. We're praying for a miracle that will allow her to get to church... She wants to be a part of it so badly!

Gonna finish this email up with a story: I literally was almost killed last night. Here's what happened! (Picturing my mom's face right now haha) So we were crossing the street our church is on. It's basically two lanes of highway going in opposite directions, but there's a crosswalk for pedestrians so getting across isn't a problem.Usually.We got across the first lane of traffic just fine and my companion started across the second so I followed. There was a car coming but it was far away so I stepped onto the street and looked at the driver to signal him to slow down. Except he... didn't. It took my brain a couple seconds to figure out that he wasn't stopping because something made me step back immediately. And as I did so, this car shot past me and stopped with its front fender two feet in front of the place where I'd been standing. Talk about scary!!!!! I stared at the guy behind the wheel and noticed he must have been not that much older than me so I kinda gave him The Look and walked away from the scene of a potential death trap unscathed. Sorella Rossi was SO mad though, apparently this kid was drinking (I didn't notice but she saw) and while we were walking away he stopped by the side of the road to apologize. Which I thought was nice... And unexpected considering his age... But I think he really did feel bad. In hindsight I can't be mad at him because he's got problems in his life just like anyone else and obviously there are no excuses for driving when you're completely wasted but my job is to forgive and forget. So I am. And even more important is the fact that God saved my life last night, so that was just one among many instances where I knew for a fact that He is real and that He's watching out for me. So my challenge to you guys this week is to take note of God's hand in your lives, every day, because I know He's much more involved than you might think, even when you feel like no one's listening to your prayers.

Sono molto soddisfatta per la quantita' di lavoro che abbiamo svolto questa settimana. Abbiamo lavorato molto con i nostri meno attivi, molto di piu' che nelle mie altre zone, il che e' bello perche' prima non riuscivo ad avere nessuna idea di cosa fare con loro! Anche se vorrei tanto poterli vedere tornare in chiesa, mi sono resa conto che i nostri meno attivi non sono in uno stato mentale o spirituale tale da accettare di fare cio'. E' difficile da accettare ma spero che le lezioni che insegnamo e lo Spirito li prepareranno per quando saranno pronti a tornare.

Abbiamo avuto un'esperienza molto interessante con Carla questa settimana. Le avevamo appena iniziato a insegnare il Vangelo di Gesu' Cristo e stavamo leggendo del battesimo in 2 Nefi 31 quando suo figlio Michele e' tornato da una veloce commissione per sua madre per portarle del caffe' ( ha 16 anni). Stava per salire in camera sua quando ho detto senza pensarci " Vorresti venire a leggere con noi?" Stavo quasi per non farlo ma ho pensato alla scrittura che dice " Poiche' non mi vergogno del Vangelo di Cristo." (Romani 1:16). I figli di Carla sapranno di sicuro che cosa lei fa con noi. E con nostra sorpresa, ha alzato le spalle ed e' venuto a sedersi! Carla si e' messa a ridere e ci ha detto che avevamo a che fare con un cattolico di ferro e abbiamo risposto con calma che eravamo li' a condividere cio' che sapevamo. Abbiamo continuato a leggere da 2 Nefi 31 e abbiamo finito la lezione. Michele ha fatto un sacco di domande ed e' stato molto gentile. Prima che ce ne andassimo ci ha ringraziato due volte (non so per che cosa ma e' stato gentile)! Non diventera' forse un simpatizzante mentre siamo qui ma so che il Signore gli ha dato una possibilita' quella sera. :)

Luisa e' venuta in chiesa questa domenica ma non lo abbiamo considerato nei nostri numeri perche' non e' venuta alla riunione sacramentale. Pero' e' venuta ai Principi Evangelici!!! Non e' mai venuta cosi' presto perche' ha sempre da fare ma questa volta ha rinunciato a qualcosa per venire! Questo e' un passo grosso per lei. Abbiamo parlato del battesimo con lei questa settimana e ha detto che vuole essere battezzata ma ha paura che non riuscira' ad osservare i comandamenti dopo. Ha un po' il problema di temere le circostanze impreviste cosi' stiamo lavorando duro per insegnarle cosa significa essere capaci di scegliere e di stabilire priorita'.

Siamo andate anche a trovare una donna che si chiama Alessandra che ci ha chiamato durante le feste e ci ha detto che deve essere assolutamente battezzata. Questo e' stato uno shock totale! Sta leggendo il Libro di Mormon e ha trovato un sacco di scritture sul battesimo e sa che e' stata indotta dal Signore a leggere. Questo e' pero' il problema... Abitava a Cagliari, il che e' dove le sorelle l'hanno trovata, ma ha avuto una lite con la donna che l'ospitava ed e' dovuta tornare alla sua vecchia casa che e' a 66 km da Cagliari. Ci vogliono due ore per arrivare li' con l'autobus e il treno cosi' e' un po' complicato per noi e non c'e' modo che lei possa venire in chiesa perche' i mezzi di trasporto per Cagliari sono pochi dove vive lei. E' una situazione difficile. Stiamo pregando che un miracolo le permetta di venire in chiesa... Vuole farne parte cosi' tanto!

Devo finire questo email con una storia: stavo letteralmente quasi per essere uccisa la scorsa sera. Ecco quello che e' successo (immagino la faccia di mia madre in questo momento ahah). Allora stavamo per attraversare la strada di fronte alla cappella. E' in pratica una grande strada a due corsie che vanno in direzioni opposte, ma ci sono le strisce pedonali cosi' attraversare non e' un problema. Solitamente. Abbiamo attraversato la prima corsia senza problemi e la mia collega ha cominciato ad attraversare la seconda cosi' l'ho seguita. C'era una macchina che stava arrivando ma era lontana cosi' ho cominciato ad attraversare la strada facendo segno al conducente di rallentare. Tranne che.. non lo ha fatto. Mi ci sono voluti un paio di secondi per capire che non si sarebbe fermato in quanto qualcosa mi ha fatto retrocedere immediatamente. Mentre facevo quello questa macchina e' saettata accanto a me e si e' fermata con il paraurti frontale proprio a due passi da dove stavo io. Parlando di spavento!!!! Ho fissato il ragazzo al volante e ho notato che non era tanto piu' grande di me cosi' gli ho dato un'occhiataccia e mi sono allontanata dalla scena di una potenziale trappola mortale assolutamente indenne. Ma Sorella Rossi era COSI' arrabbiata, a quanto pare questo ragazzo stava bevendo (non lo avevo notato ma lei si') e mentre ce ne stavamo andando si e' fermato sul ciglio della strada per scusarsi. Il che ho pensato fosse gentile...e inaspettato, considerata la sua eta'.. ma penso che si sia sentito davvero mortificato. Con il senno di poi non posso avercela con lui perche' ha problemi nella sua vita proprio come tutti gli altri e ovviamente non ci sono scuse per guidare quando si e' completamente ubriachi ma il mio compito e' di perdonare e dimenticare. Ed e' quello che ho fatto. E anche piu' importante di cio' e' il fatto che Dio mi ha salvato la vita la notte scorsa, cosi' quella e' stata solo una delle molte occasioni in cui ho saputo con certezza che Lui e' reale e che mi protegge. Cosi' la mia sfida per voi questa settimana e' di prendere nota della mano di Dio nella vostra vita, ogni giorno, perche' so che Lui e' molto piu' coinvolto di quanto possiate pensare, anche quando pensate che nessuno ascolta le vostre preghiere.

Transfer 10, Week 2

CHRISTMAS!!! It may be already over but there's still New Year's! And the Befana if you're in Italy. Anyway, I got to skype my family on Christmas Day and the member whose house we were at made us a dinner entirely of seafood. I'm not really used to fish anymore so that was interesting but... She did a really good job! We brought brownies too so that was great. Everyone's always down for brownies!

Us missionaries get to watch two movies for Christmas. One of them was Big Hero 6 and I LOVED IT!!! I'm going to watch it at least ten times when I get back. Instead of watching another movie us sorelle went to the theater to see a ballet of Cinderella! I hadn't seen a ballet in so long! Props to them for the costumes. They were fantastic.

The members gave us a ton of food that was left over from a Christmas party so we had popcorn, chips, cookies, juice, pandoro, panettone, chocolate... Lots of holiday food. ;) We also have a foosball table here so we played with that and ate some more. It was a good time. But we're all super ready to get back to work... Being a missionary is hard when you're not busy teaching. Bring in the new year!!

This morning we went to a free World War I museum and got pizza for lunch. We were supposed to go explore an ancient cave but it was closed because of safety hazards or something... And we can't go ice skating because the rink opens at 6 and that's when P-day ends. You win some you lose some I guess!

We were able to visit Carla this week and started talking to her about the program the church made to help people stop smoking. She really wants to quit but she's never been able to and she's really receptive to our teaching, so we know the Lord will help her through this. It's been hard for her to get out of the house because of her depression but we're bringing members to her lessons and hopefully that will help her come to church.

We're teaching Rina the new convert lessons (so basically reviewing all of the lessons she was taught before her baptism) and visiting a few less-actives here and there, which has been great. I've met so many people in the last couple weeks (almost three now, how crazy is that?) and there are still more I haven't seen at all! This city is so big... I love it.

It's been kind of hard to remember the names of the members here because last names in Sardegna are like nothing I've ever heard before... Haha! Also, a couple people have asked me if I'm Sardinian because of my accent. :D I actually really like the Sardinian accent. It's nice and crisp. Nothing like Sicilian ahaha

I don't really know what this week will hold. We're figuring it out a day at a time because of the holidays... But I'm excited for this new year and all the great things that are going to happen! I hope you all have a wonderful new year and that you're all working on some great resolutions. :) Vi voglio bene!

NATALE!!! Sara' anche gia' passato ma c'e' ancora il Capodanno! E la Befana se vi trovate in Italia. Allora, ho potuto fare Skype con la mia famiglia a Natale e la sorella da cui siamo state ha preparato una cena interamente a base di pesce. Non sono tanto abituata al pesce cosi' e' stato interessante ma... e' stata bravissima! Abbiamo anche portato i brownies cosi' e' stato magnifico. A tutti piacciono i brownies!

Noi missionari abbiamo potuto guardare due film a Natale. Uno di questi e' stato Big Hero 6 e MI PIACE TANTO!!!! Lo rivedro' dieci volte quando torno a casa. Invece di guardare un altro film noi sorelle siamo andate a teatro a vedere il balletto di Cenerentola! Era tanto che non vedevo un balletto! Bellissimi i costumi. Erano fantastici.

 I membri ci hanno dato una tonnellata di cibo che' e rimasto da una festa di Natale cosi' abbiamo mangiato popcorn, patatine, biscotti, succo, pandoro, panettone, cioccolatini... un sacco di cibo tipico di questo periodo festivo. ;) Abbiamo anche un tavolo da biliardo qui cosi' abbiamo giocato e abbiamo mangiato ancora un po'. Abbiamo passato una bella giornata. Ma siamo piu' che pronti a tornare al lavoro... E' difficile essere missionari quando non si e' impegnati ad insegnare. Che ben venga il nuovo anno!!

Questa mattina siamo andati ad un museo sulla Prima Guerra Mondiale con ingresso gratis e abbiamo mangiato la pizza a pranzo. Volevamo andare a esplorare una vecchia caverna ma era chiusa per motivi di sicurezza.. e non possiamo andare a pattinare perche' la pista di pattinaggio apre alle 18 ed e' quando finisce il P-day. Si vince qualcosa e si perde qualcos'altro, suppongo!

Siamo andate a trovare Carla  questa settimana e abbiamo cominciato a parlarle del programma della chiesa per aiutare la gente a smettere di fumare. Vuole davvero smettere ma non ne e' mai stata capace finora ed e' molto ricettiva ai nostri insegnamenti cosi' sappiamo che il Signore l'aiutera'. E' stato difficile per lei uscire di casa a causa della sua depressione ma stiamo portando dei membri alle sue lezioni e speriamo che questo l'aiuti a venire in chiesa.

Stiamo insegnando a Rina le lezioni per i nuovi convertiti ( in pratica rivediamo tutte le lezioni insegnatele prima del battesimo) e stiamo visitando un po' di membri meno attivi qui e li', il che e' stato bello. Ho incontrato tante persone nelle ultime due settimane ( quasi tre ora, pazzesco, vero?) e ci sono ancora tante che non ho visto per niente!!! Questa citta' e' cosi' grande... mi piace tanto.

E' stato alquanto difficile ricordare i nomi dei membri qui perche' i cognomi in Sardegna non sono simili a nulla di quanto abbia sentito finora... Ahah! Inoltre un paio di persone mi hanno chiesto se fossi sarda a causa del mio accento. :D In effetti mi piace proprio l'accento sardo. E' bello e preciso. Non ha nulla a che fare con il siciliano ahahah

Non so proprio cosa abbia in serbo questa settimana. Lo capiremo un po' vivendo alla giornata a causa delle feste... Ma sono emozionata per questo nuovo anno e per tutte le belle cose che succederanno! Spero che abbiate tutti un meraviglioso anno nuovo e che tutti vi stiate adoperando per realizzare grandi proponimenti.:)
