Transfer 8, Week 1

New transfer, let's go!

This is now the end of my first full week as a trainer. I definitely made a lot of mistakes this week but learned a lot from them. It has been interesting to see the kind of adjustments I've had to make to my way of teaching and doing things. Part of it is trial and error, but I like how things are coming so far! Sorella Holiday is learning fast and she has so much energy, even though everything is new and surely not easy to adjust to. Her love for the members has grown so much and so has mine!! 

Speaking of the members :) Our new ward mission leader helped us organize an activity for this past Sunday and not only was it fun but it was a great spiritual experience for the members. It reminded them of the basics and of how important it is to hold onto the word of God and persevere faithfully in the gospel, even after we gain a testimony. It always gets stronger if we work for it and obey!

I'm grateful for all the great efforts my trainer and I put into helping the members get closer to the missionaries in my first area because those skills are sure coming in handy here. :) I still can't believe I'm at the same point in my mission that Sorella Margheriti was at when she trained me! Time flies when you're working hard!

This week we visited a new less-active family! Well, new to us. We had been trying to visit them for a while but they were always busy and then one day as we were doing phone calls to tell members about an activity we felt like we should call this family! So we did and they told us they probably couldn't come to the activity but that we could come over. We were so surprised! So we went to their house and spent a good hour just getting to know them. They gladly listened to our spiritual thought and invited us to come back. We talked to our ward mission leader about the visit and he suggested we ask them if we could bring one of the youth to our next visit so their kids can get to know other youth in the church. It might help them warm up to the members again. We're looking forward to working with this family. Their testimonies are strong and they love the gospel. They're just struggling to decide to come back.

Tina has decided that she's not interested in changing religions. She loves the missionaries and the members but she probably isn't going to want to do lessons with us anymore. Mario told us and the anziani this the other day. Mario still really wants to investigate the church though. He's got his heart set on finding the right one. Our ward mission leader is aware of this problem so we'll have to really pray and work together to help their family out...

We gave Elvira a Book of Mormon this week, as well as a Conference talk! She tried to watch Conference but had a problem finding the Church website. But she still tried!!! She's responding really well to our spiritual thoughts. :)

Lorenzo has been hard to meet with because he's busy closing down his shop so we were only able to teach him once this week. We brought him a conference talk and read him a piece of it, which he really enjoyed. After that he asked us a few great questions about our missions and was really impressed that were doing all this for the Church without getting paid! He says once he's ready he'll swing by the church because he's curious to see how it is. We're really praying for him to be ready soon...

We are so excited for zone conference tomorrow! I'll talk more about that next week :) I would write more but the pictures are gonna have to tell the rest! I hope everyone has a fantastic week! Love you all!

Nuovo trasferimento, e vai!

Questa e' ormai la fine della mia prima settimana completa come addestratrice. Sicuramente ho fatto molti errori questa settimana ma ho imparato molto da essi. E' stato interessante vedere il tipo di adattamento che ho dovuto fare al mio modo di insegnare e di fare le cose. In parte e' stato il provare e il fare errori ma mi piace come le cose stanno procedendo finora! Sorella Holiday sta imparando presto ed ha tanta energia anche se tutto e' nuovo e sicuramente l'adattamento non e' facile. Il suo amore per i membri e' cresciuto tanto e anche il mio!!!

Parlando dei membri :) Il nostro nuovo responsabile di rione del lavoro missionario ci ha aiutato ad organizzare un'attivita'per questa scorsa domenica e non e' stata soltanto divertente ma e' stata una grande esperienza spirituale per i membri. Ha fatto ricordare loro le cose essenziali e quanto sia importante mantenersi saldi alla parola di Dio e di perseverare fedelmente nel Vangelo, anche dopo avere ottenuto una testimonianza. Diventa sempre piu' forte se noi ci impegnamo e siamo obbedienti!

Sono grata per tutti gli sforzi che io e la mia addestratrice abbiamo fatto per aiutare i membri ad avvicinarsi ai missionari nella mia prima zona perche' queste capacita' sicuramente mi vengono in aiuto ora. :) Ancora non ci credo che mi trovo ora nello stesso punto della mia missione in cui si trovava Sorella Margheriti quando addestrava me! Il tempo vola quando si lavora duro!

 Questa settimana abbiamo visitato una nuova famiglia inattiva! Beh, nuova per noi. Abbiamo cercato di andarli a trovare da un po' ma erano sempre impegnati, poi un giorno mentre telefonavamo ai membri  per annunciare un'attivita' abbiamo sentito di voler chiamare questa famiglia! Cosi' lo abbiamo fatto e ci hanno detto che probabilmente non sarebbero potuti venire all'attivita' ma che potevamo andare a  trovarli. Siamo state cosi' soprese! Cosi' siamo andate a casa loro e abbiamo trascorso una buona ora  solo per conoscerli. Hanno ascoltato con piacere il nostro pensiero spirituale e ci hanno invitato a tornare. Abbiamo parlato con il nostro responsabile di rione del lavoro missionario di questa visita e ci ha suggerito di chiedere a loro se potevamo portare con noi la volta successiva uno dei nostri giovani cosi' che i loro figli potessero conoscere altri giovani della chiesa. La loro testimonianza e' forte e amano il Vangelo. Hanno solo difficolta' a decidere di tornare.

Tina ha deciso che non e' interessata a cambiare religione. Ama i missionari e i membri ma probabilmente non vorra' continuare le lezioni con noi. Questo e' quanto Mario ha detto a noi e agli anziani l'altro giorno. Mario davvero vuole saperne di piu' della chiesa pero'. E' determinato a trovare quella giusta. Il nostro dirigente del lavoro missionario e' al corrente di questa situazione quindi dovremmo davvero pregare e lavorare insieme per aiutare questa famiglia...

Abbiamo dato ad Elvira un Libro di Mormon questa settimana e anche un discorso della Conferenza!Ha provato a guardare la Conferenza ma ha avuto dei problemi a trovare il sito della Chiesa. Ma ci ha provato!!! Sta reagendo molto bene ai nostri pensieri spirituali. :)

Con Lorenzo e' stato difficile incontrarsi perche' ha da fare per chiudere il suo negozio cosi' abbiamo potuto insegnare solo una volta questa settimana. Gli abbiamo portato un discorso della Conferenza e gli abbiamo letto un pezzo, cosa che lui ha davvero gradito. Dopo di cio' ci ha fatto alcune buone domande sulla nostra missione ed e' rimasto molto impressionato dal fatto che stiamo facendo tutto questo per la Chiesa senza essere pagati! Ha detto che quando si sentira' pronto si avvicinera' alla Chiesa perche' e' curioso di vedere com'e'. Stiamo davvero pregando perche' sia pronto subito...

Siamo cosi' emozionate per la conferenza di zona di domani! Ne parlero' di piu' la prossima settimana:) Vorrei potere scrivere di piu' ma le foto racconteranno il resto! Spero che abbiate una settimana fantastica!

Transfer 7, Week 6

So today is my first P-day with my greenie (new missionary), Sorella Holiday, and she is doing great!! I am amazed by her Italian and her willingness to get out and get going. It really is refreshing to have some greenie power here in Ragusa. :) We've made some language-learning goals and even had an "English fast" yesterday where we spoke only Italian for nearly 24 hours!! Sorella Holiday is a fantastic example of diligence for me. Since that's the Christlike attribute I'm studying this transfer I find it really fitting that I'm training her. :) She's going to be a great leader in this mission one day!!

As for me, adjusting to training has been an adventure. Lots of ups and downs, especially as far as sorting out permesso di soggiorno (permission to reside in the country for a year) business goes! Luckily the Lord blessed me to know where to go to get everything taken care of and I was really grateful for my language skills helping out with the legal stuff. We got it all done right away on Saturday and felt much better afterwards! I'm so glad because I was stressing out big-time the second I saw all the paperwork and the instructions from the mission office... hahaha. Made it out alive though!

Yesterday we were watching the broadcast of General Conference (our church's semi-annual worldwide conference) and as our three new apostles shared their testimonies I found I could really relate to them. They spoke about feeling inadequate for their new calling, which made sense because it's definitely not easy to become an apostle! And, in my case, it sure isn't easy to become a trainer. They're very different responsibilities but the overwhelming feeling is quite similar! But one thing that was said really stood out to me: the Lord qualifies those whom he calls. That is so true!! I have many shortcomings as a missionary and as an individual, but I have no shortage of guidance and support and good examples from the people around me. I am very blessed and I'm looking forward to learning more and more with Sorella Holiday!

Well, Sorella Reber was really sick for two days this week so we didn't get as many lessons in as we would have liked before she left. Luckily she got back on her feet fast and we were able to visit  one of the less-active members here in Ragusa. As we spoke to her she started asking a barrage of questions and expressed some doubts she had been having, of which we were totally unaware. She'd never opened up like that before! It really gave us insight to what she needs to be taught in the next few visits. It was hard for Sorella Reber to leave her at a time like this but I'm confident that Sorella Holiday has great things to offer in her stead. :)

Sorella Reber and I were also able to teach Elvira one last time together! We showed her how to get to the LDS.org site so she could watch Conference (she is a very curious young lady, it's amazing!). As we navigated the site she looked at a picture of President Uchtdorf at the stand in the Conference center and said, "How is it that you have apostles?" I have RARELY gotten this question on the mission! We were so thrilled because we'd been planning to teach her the Restoration!!! We explained it to her and she understood everything, especially the need for priesthood authority. I am SO excited to work with Elvira! Sorella Holiday hasn't met her yet but we have a lesson scheduled for Tuesday so it's going to be great!!

So, Sorella Holiday's first lesson on the field was with Simone! We taught him the Restoration and Sorella Holiday shared a fantastic testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith. We used that lesson to lead into General Conference and the importance of revelation from modern prophets and apostles. For a sfida (challenge) we gave Simone a talk from a past General Conference to read and invited him to watch a session of this weekend's conference. He said he would try to watch it from home since he couldn't make it to church. It was really great!! Proud of my "figlia" (daughter) for her contribution. :)

Side note, Mario AND Tina came to watch the Sunday session of Conference yesterday!!! We were so excited to see them!! The members were too, they were all crowding around them and talking for a long time! Speaking of the members, yesterday Fratello Lo Monaco gave us strawberry yogurt, Sorella Campo gave us some REALLY good sausage, and Sorella Chines gave us a piece of ciambellone! (It's a donut-shaped cake they make here and it's so good.) So much generosity!! We'd also eaten lunch with Vescovo (Bishop) Manzini and his family so it was just a really great day to do some member-bonding. There is no place like Ragusa!

Also today we went to the mall and it was a maaajor success. Sorella Holiday got a coat from Zara, I found a siiick new camera (BEST DAY EVER, my mission has been changed forever. I'm going to be camera-happy this week, just you wait for next week's email.), I now own a 16 gig SD card (it really makes a difference!), and the lady at the supermarket had an old man next to me scan his supermarket card so I could get a discount. IT WAS SO NICE AND UNEXPECTED. These Italians couldn't be more generous, for real. I am so grateful. :)

That's our biggest news from this week. We are really looking forward to Zone Conference next Tuesday! And Sorella Holiday is excited to meet all the awesome people I've been telling her about. Things are looking great. And now on to the new transfer! Number 8! Woohoo!!!

 Cosi' oggi e' il mio primo P-day con la mia verdina (nuova missionaria sul campo), Sorella Holiday, e lei sta facendo benissimo!!! Sono meravigliata del suo italiano e della sua determinazione ad andare a lavorare e a fare le cose. E' davvero stimolante avere un po' della potenza di una verdina qui a Ragusa. :) Abbiamo fissato delle mete per imparare la lingua e abbiamo anche fatto un "digiuno di inglese" ieri in cui abbiamo parlato solo italiano per quasi 24 ore!! Sorella Holiday e' un fantastico esempio di diligenza per me. Poiche' questa e' la qualita' cristiana che sto studiando in questo trasferimento trovo che sia davvero appropriato per me addestrarla. :) Diventera' una grande leader nella missione un giorno!!

Per quanto riguarda me, abituarmi ad addestrare e' stata un'avventura. Un sacco di alti e bassi specialmente per capirci qualcosa sul permesso di soggiorno (il permesso per risiedere nel paese per un anno)! Fortunatamente il Signore mi ha benedetto nel sapere dove andare per poter prendermi cura di tutto e sono stata molto grata per le mie capacita' linguistiche che mi hanno aiutato con tutte le cose legali. Abbiamo risolto tutto tempestivamente sabato e ci siamo sentite molto meglio dopo! Ne sono molto grata perche' mi sono stressata alla grande solo nel vedere tutti i moduli e le istruzioni che l'ufficio della missione mi aveva mandato...ahahah. Ma ne sono uscita viva!

Ieri stavamo vedendo la trasmissione via satellite della Conferenza Generale (la conferenza semiannuale mondiale della nostra chiesa) e mentre i nuovi tre apostoli condividevano le loro testimonianze ho trovato che potevo davvero immedesimarmi con loro. Hanno parlato di come si sentivano inadeguati a quella nuova chiamata il che ha senso perche' non e' definitivamente facile diventare un apostolo! E, nel mio caso, sicuramente non e' facile diventare un'addestratrice. Sono compiti molto diversi ma la sensazione di enorme responsabilita' e' molto simile! Ma una cosa che e' stata detta mi ha davvero colpito: Il Signore qualifica coloro che chiama. E' cosi' vero!! Ho molte mancanze come missionaria e come persona ma non ho alcuna limitazione  nella guida, nel sostegno e nei buoni esempi della gente intorno a me. Sono molto benedetta e non vedo l'ora di imparare sempre di piu' con Sorella Holiday!

Ebbene, Sorella Reber e' stata molto male per due giorni questa settimana cosi' non abbiamo potuto fare tante lezioni come ne avremmo volute fare prima che partisse. Fortunatamente si e' ripresa velocemente e abbiamo potuto visitare uno dei membri meno attivi qui a Ragusa. Mentre le parlavamo ha cominciato a fare un mucchio di domande ed ha espresso dei dubbi che aveva dei quali eravamo completamente all'oscuro. Non si era mai aperta cosi' prima! Abbiamo avuto un'idea di cio' di cui dovevamo parlarle nelle visite successive. E' stato difficile per Sorella Reber lasciarla in un momento come questo ma sono fiduciosa che Sorella Holiday avra' grandi cose da offrirle al posto suo. :)

Io e Sorella Reber abbiamo potuto insegnare ad Elvira un'ultima volta insieme! Le abbiamo mostrato come andare su LDS.org cosi' da poter vedere la Conferenza (e' una giovane donna molto curiosa, e' incredibile!). Mentre navigavamo nel sito ha guardato una foto del Presidente Uchtdorf al pulpito del Centro delle Conferenze e ha detto "Com'e' che avete apostoli?" Mi hanno fatto RARAMENTE questa domanda in missione! Eravamo cosi' emozionate  perche' stavamo programmando di insegnarle la Restaurazione!!! Glielo abbiamo spiegato  e ha capito tutto, specialmente il bisogno dell'autorita' del sacerdozio. Sono COSI' emozionata di lavorare con Elvira! Sorella Holiday non l'ha incontrata ancora ma abbiamo una lezione in programma martedi' cosi' sara' bello!!

Allora la prima lezione di Sorella Holiday sul campo di missione e' stata con Simone! Gli abbiamo insegnato la Restaurazione e Sorella Holiday ha condiviso una fantastica testimonianza del profeta Joseph Smith. Abbiamo usato quella lezione per arrivare alla Conferenza Generale e all'importanza della rivelazione dei profeti moderni e degli apostoli. Come sfida abbiamo dato da leggere a Simone un articolo da una Conferenza Generale passata e lo abbiamo invitato a guardare una sessione della conferenza di questo fine settimana. Ha detto che avrebbe provato a guardarla da casa poiche' non poteva andare in chiesa. E' stato davvero bello!! Fiera di mia "figlia" per il suo contributo. :)

A proposito, Mario e Tina sono venuti in chiesa a vedere la sessione di domenica della Conferenza ieri!!! Siamo state cosi' contente di vederli!! Anche i membri lo sono stati, si sono tutti affollati intorno a loro e hanno parlato per tanto tempo! Parlando dei membri, ieri Fratello Lo Monaco ci dato lo yogurt alle fragole, Sorella Campo ci ha dato della salsiccia DAVVERO buona e Sorella Chines ci ha dato un pezzo di ciambellone! Quanta generosita'!! Abbiamo anche pranzato con il vescovo Manzini e la sua famiglia cosi' e' stato davvero il giorno perfetto per legare con i membri. Nessun posto e' come Ragusa!

Inoltre oggi siamo state al centro commerciale ed e' stato un gran successo. Sorella Holiday ha preso una giacca da Zara, io ho trovato una nuova macchina fotografica eccezionale (IL PIU' BEL GIORNO, la mia missione cambiera' per sempre. Saro' felice per la mia nuova macchina fotografica questa settimana, aspettate di vedere il prossimo email). Ora ho una scheda di memoria da 16 GB ( fa davvero una bella differenza!) e la signora al negozio ha chiesto a un uomo anziano vicino a me di poter usare la sua tessera cosi' da farmi avere uno sconto. E' STATO COSI' GENTILE E INASPETTATO. Questi italiani non potrebbero essere piu' generosi, davvero. Sono cosi' grata.:)

Queste sono le notizie prinicipali di questa settimana. Non vediamo l'ora che arrivi la conferenza di zona il prossimo martedi'! E Sorella Holiday e' emozionata di incontrare tutte le persone formidabili di cui le ho parlato. Le cose vanno bene. E ora vai con il prossimo trasferimento! Numero 8! Evviva!!!

But we were really happy from finishing permesso stuff so I treated myself. :o)/ Bevo l'orzo nel caldo sole siciliano... non ha senso ma eravamo veramente felici di aver finito la procedura per il permesso di soggiorno cosi' mi sono concessa una cosa buona. :o)
