Okay, this week was pretty incredible. Stuff happening all
over the place.
So, Marta is still doing AWESOME. We talked to her about
temple work and genealogy, we reviewed a parable that we had studied in Sunday School,
and we taught her the Word of Wisdom! Not only did she accept everything, she's
making visible progress with her testimony and she's still reading the Book of
Mormon every day. She's always more than willing to pray at every lesson and we
moved her baptismal date ahead a week!! She is SO committed!! We're really
proud of her. One cute thing she said: when we told her that part of the Word
of Wisdom means abstaining from coffee she said, "Okay, starting tomorrow
I'll replace my morning coffee with orzo." Hahaha! And she did it!
We also brought Marta to a Family Home Evening with Mario and Francesco. Mario is a member but his son isn't, so the anziani figured they'd teach Francesco a lesson and invite Marta! We had dinner together and Marta helped in the kitchen and was totally comfortable around everybody and then we watched a short movie about Jesus Christ. I can't remember what it was called but we felt the Spirit really strong and Marta liked it! Even better, she and Mario are friends now. :) Member missionary work! Sadly Marta didn't make it to church at the end of the week because there was an accident that blocked the only road to get out of her area but she asked us to take notes and review them with her later. Tuesday was AWESOME. We taught two lessons to two new
investigators, Giulio and Luisa! We taught both of them the Restoration. Luisa
is really passionate about history (like me, that was cool!) and she loves
reading the Bible so when we gave her the Book of Mormon she said she would
definitely read it and if she felt it was true and if she was still interested
she would keep seeing us. And if not, she didn't want to see us anymore. Very
blunt. Hahaha! Giulio, on the other hand, met the missionaries when he was in
his twenties but he didn't keep seeing them because his wife, who was very
Catholic, wouldn't let him. Giuli is 70 now but we know we met him for a reason
because he is so open to the gospel! He accepted a Book of Mormon and we got
him to pray and in the prayer he said, "Today I feel something that
convinces me." It was COOL! That's the Spirit at work!! I honestly feel
really privileged to be able to teach people like them - so open and willing to
let the Spirit help them. Seeing their progress strengthens my testimony in
ways I can't describe. :)
Bertina wasn't able to make much progress this week because
she's been busy taking care of her kids. But! We finished teaching her the Plan
of Salvation and her sister-in-law (we FINALLY figured out that her name is Delia.
Hahaha) sat in on the lesson once again! We told her we'd bring her a Book of
Mormon in Albanian and she said she'd love to read it. Anyway, Bertina really
liked what we taught her and she said she's not perfect but that she tries her
best to be a good person and do what she thinks is right. And then we watched
Because of Him. It really brought the Spirit!! I love that clip. If you haven't

us her wedding pictures with Alfredo. They've been married for two years!
Basically Bertina's family is the best. We always feel at home with them. :)
And now we come to the lessons with the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Let's just say that the first one (with Loredana and Pina) did not go well...
at all. It started out okay but then they got started on some stuff that I
won't get into and it turned into a Bible bashing session on their part and the
more we tried to bear testimony the less they listened. It was SO ANNOYING! As
soon as they heard something they didn't like they interrupted us and basically
tried to tell us that we don't know the Bible, that our church makes things up,
that they feel bad for us, etc. etc. It was ugly. There was no Spirit present
at all. What's more strange is that at the end Loredana asked if we wanted to
pray and we were like uhh... what?! She's never been the first to bring it up
so we thought maybe there was still a bit of a change of heart going on.
Anyway, they want to keep meeting with us but we don't want to keep seeing
them. It's obvious that they're really closed to the gospel and that they're
just trying to "teach" us the Bible. I'm just really sick of losing
the Spirit when we see them. Sigh. It happens!
And then after that lesson something incredible happened...
Ale surprised me with a RUGBY BALL!!!!!!!!! I was so stoooked!!!! She and Mamma
Gigante signed it! And it's blue!! It's funny cuz Ale didn't even know that
it's my favorite color. :) So this was definitely a huge pick-me-up for me!!! I
basically forgot about how badly the lesson with Loredana and Pina went and
that was that. :D Earlier today (for P-day) we played with it and it's kinda
dirty and grass-stained now but I had a lot of fun. I really missed playing so
I'm REALLY happy that Ale thought to get me a ball!! Ahh. :)
Friday was a spiritual BOMB because we went to Rome for an
addestramento (training) with Elder Teixeira, one of the Seventy. He's Portuguese I think.
Sardegna and Napoli were at the conference too, so I got to see Anziano Ferrero
again (we were in the same district at the Madrid MTC) and I met a bunch of
other missionaries! It was great! Anziano Barrow was there too, our parents
have been friends for a long time and I had met them while I was visiting the
campus at BYU two years ago so it was cool to finally get to know their son in
person! And I met a sister who knows one of my roommates. THAT was great.
Anyway, Elder Teixeira helped us improve our finding tactics and he had some of
the missionaries do role plays to help us visualize everything. He shared the
conversion stories of his family members and basically reminded us that you
never know who's been prepared to receive the gospel - our primary
responsibility is to talk to EVERYONE. It's the kind of stuff that you know but
don't really stay as focused on after a while. And Sister Teixeira was a huge,
HUGE help because she challenged us to read the Book of Mormon in 65 days
(that's how long it took Joseph Smith to translate it!) and she promised us
that it would change our mission. So we left that conference really ready to
boost the work!
I can tell that there are a lot of great things to come here in Italy, especially with the construction of the temple going on. The members have so much faith and they are so prepared to finally have a temple in their own country. I know it's already changed the work here a lot even though it isn't finished yet so I'm SURE that once it's done, the Church in Italy will see an explosion in miracles. Temples are such special places. I really miss being able to go but I'm glad that the mission has been teaching me to appreciate them much more.

On Saturday morning we did some finding. We were walking
past an intersection when we saw a lady across the street that is friends with Claretta
and so I figured we could cross and try to talk to her about the church.
Sorella Margheriti said okay but I soon realized that her intent wasn't to talk
to the lady but rather to two people that were sitting on the front steps of a
doctor's office behind her! She told me later that the Spirit like kicked her
in the pants to get her to go talk to those people because she almost kept
walking. So we talked to them! The lady was from Santo Domingo and her name was
Marina. The other guy... we don't know his name but the first thing he said
was, "Oh, you guys are Mormons?" in this totally non-appreciative
tone. Sorella Margheriti started talking to him and in the meantime I talked to
Marina and it was funny because the man was being grumpy about all his problems
and then Marina (who didn't even know him before this conversation) said to
him, "You listen to them because they're teaching you about God!!"
Bahaha!!! It was so cool! Then I asked Marina if she wanted to read the Book of
Mormon and what do you know, that morning I'd told myself that I needed to
bring one in Spanish. Well! That was the Spirit thinking, not me. Because Marina
accepted it! And as I was handing it to her I heard a voice say, "I want
one too! If you have it in Italian I'll take it!" I turned and saw a small
blonde lady and I said okay and Sorella Margheriti heard everything so all I
had to do was turn around and she had already stuck out her Italian copy of the
Book of Mormon for me to give to the lady. But get this!! The lady, whose name
is Paola, knows one of the sisters in our branch (Sorella Calabrese) and she
said that they'd talked about the church before but that she'd never been able
to read the Book of Mormon! She was SO INTERESTED! Like she almost demanded
that we give her a copy! And then Paola said that she'd been to church before
and that Sorella Calabrese had invited her to General Conference and that she
wanted to go! IT WAS A BIG WOW MOMENT. I couldn't believe my ears!! I ended up
getting Paola and Marina's numbers and Paola would have come to church
yesterday if it hadn't been for her lack of a ride. But we'll get her there
next time!
As for the man, Sorella Margheriti
said he totally had a change of heart while they were talking. He started out
annoyed and irritated with God and the more they talked the more he softened
and at some point he said, "My mother said I wasn't even supposed to be
born so that must be why I've had so many problems in my life. Why am I even
here? What's the point?" And Sorella Margheriti was practically crying with
joy because the gospel has all the answers he's looking for. We gave him the
brochure about the Plan of Salvation and he said he'd be alright with meeting
with us again.
Basically when you obey the
promptings of the Spirit, the Lord sends a downpour of blessings your way. Holy
wow. :)
On Saturday we saw Alfonso again! He brought a different guy
with him this time. His name is Marco and he's basically like a full-time
missionary for their church, hahaha. He's probably 70-something and extremely
knowledgeable about the Bible. While we were talking to Alfonso about the Plan
of Salvation and Jesus Christ's role in it Marco pulled out all sorts of
scriptures that supported what we were teaching! I don't even think he had any
intention to go against what we were saying. He was simply sharing what he
knew. They did bring up a few doctrines here and there that weren't entirely
accurate but we didn't even go off on a tangent on those. It seemed like all
the questions Alfonso was asking and all the scriptures that Marco was thinking
of were guided by the Spirit - for real!!! So yes, for that lesson we
absolutely felt the Spirit. It was aaamazing. :) And Francesco was there with
us again, always bearing strong testimony and really helping us learn how to
collaborate with members.
On Sunday we went to the famiglia Guidara's house for a
get-together with the young adults! We had pizza fritta and potato salad and
beans and salad and crispelle... Mmmm. It was all good stuff. :D Then we all
hung out and played games and talked and laughed and I played their nice
acoustic piano and basically everyone had lots of fun. :) I really love the
members of Rome 5. They make me feel even more at home here than I already do.
One last big highlight: Elder Teixeira taught us how to use
the mormon.org cards more effectively! Instead of asking people if they've talked to the
missionaries before we pull out the card, ask them if they'd like to check it
out, and then it either starts a conversation or they accept it and walk away
with this little invitation to investigate the church! It is almost FOOLPROOF.
Very few people say no and a bunch have asked us more about who we are and what
the website is for!! Gotta love that man. Elder Teixeira forever. :D
So let's
just say that the work is moving swiftly along and that I am loving every
second here. There's no place I'd rather be!

Ok. Questa settimana è stata
abbastanza incredibile. Sono successe tante cose.
Marta sta andando ancora BENISSIMO. Le abbiamo spiegato del lavoro
al tempio e della genealogia, abbiamo rivisto una parabola che avevamo studiato
durante la lezione di Scuola Domenicale e le abbiamo insegnato la Parola di
Saggezza! Non solo ha accettato tutto, ma sta progredendo nella sua
testimonianza e continua a leggere il Libro di Mormon ogni giorno.
E’ sempre più che disposta a pregare ad ogni lezione e abbiamo anticipato di una
settimana la data del suo battesimo!! Ha preso davvero sul serio questo
impegno!! Siamo molto fiere di lei. Una cosa carina che ha detto: quando le
abbiamo spiegato la parte della Parola di Saggezza che indica di astenersi dal
bere caffé, ha detto” Ok, da domani sostituirò il caffè che prendo al mattino con una tazza di orzo”.
Ahahah! E lo ha fatto!
Abbiamo anche invitato Marta ad una serata familiare con Mario e
Francesco. Mario è membro della Chiesa , ma non suo figlio. Così, gli anziani hanno pensato di preparare una lezione per Francesco
ed hanno invitato anche Marta! Abbiamo cenato insieme e Marta ha aiutato in
cucina. Era totalmente a suo agio con tutti. Poi, abbiamo guardato un breve film
su Gesù. Non ricordo il titolo, ma lo Spirito era molto forte e a Marta
è piaciuto. La cosa migliore è che, adesso, lei e Mario sono amici. J Il lavoro missionario dei membri! Purtroppo, Marta non
è riuscita
a venire in chiesa alla fine della settimana a causa di un incidente che aveva
bloccato la strada vicino casa sua, ma ci ha chiesto di prendere appunti per
rivederli, poi, insieme. Che esempio!
Martedì è stato BELLISSIMO. Abbiamo insegnato due lezioni a due nuovi
simpatizzanti. Giulio e Luisa! Abbiamo insegnato la Restaurazione. Luisa
è un’appassionata di storia (come me, che forte!) e le piace leggere la
Bibbia. Così, quando le abbiamo dato il Libro di Mormon ha detto che lo
avrebbe letto di sicuro e che, se avesse sentito in
cuor suo che è vero, avrebbe continuato ad incontrarsi con noi. Altrimenti,
avrebbe smesso di vederci. Molto diretta. Hahaha! Invece Giulio ha conosciuto i
missionari quando aveva una ventina d’anni, ma smise di incontrarsi con loro perché sua moglie, che era molto cattolica, non glielo permetteva. Giulio
adesso ha settant’anni, ma sappiamo di averlo incontrato per un motivo specifico
perché è così aperto al Vangelo! Ha accettato un Libro di Mormon e
l’invito a pregare. Nella sua preghiera ha detto:
“Oggi provo qualcosa che mi convince.”. Era fantastico! Questo è il lavoro dello Spirito!! È davvero un grande privilegio poter insegnare a persone
così - così aperte
e disposte a farsi aiutare dallo Spirito. Il loro progresso rafforza la mia
testimonianza in modi difficili da descrivere. :)
Bertina non è riuscita a fare tanto questa settimana perché è stata impegnata a prendersi cura dei figli. MA abbiamo finito di
insegnarle il Piano di Salvezza e la cognata (FINALMENTE abbiamo capito che si
chiama Delia. Hahaha) è rimasta di nuovo per la lezione. Le abbiamo promesso un Libro di
Mormon in albanese e lei ci ha detto che le farebbe piacere leggerlo. A Bertina
è piaciuto molto ciò che le abbiamo insegnato ci ha detto di non essere perfetta, ma di
sforzarsi di essere una buona persona e di fare ciò che le sembra giusto. E poi, abbiamo guardato Grazie a Lui. Lo
Spirito era forte!!! Mi piace tanto quel video. Se non lo avete visto,

preghiera di chiusura e Delia ci ha mostrato le foto del suo matrimonio con
Alfredo. Sono sposati da due anni! La famiglia di Bertina è fantastica.
Ci sentiamo sempre a casa con loro. :)
E ora le lezioni con le Testimoni di Geova. Diciamo che la prima
(con Loredana e Pina) non è andata per niente bene. Avevamo iniziato bene, ma, poi, si
è deviati su cose che non sto nemmeno a spiegarvi. Il tutto si
è trasformato in una aggressione della Bibbia da parte loro e
più cercavamo di portare la nostra testimonianza,
più loro non ascoltavano. Era così FASTIDIOSO! Non appena condividevamo qualcosa che a loro non
piaceva, ci interrompevano cercando di convincerci che non conosciamo la Bibbia,
che la nostra Chiesa si inventa le cose, che hanno compassione di noi, etc. etc.
Era brutto. Lo Spirito era assente. La cosa strana è stata quando, alla fine, Loredana ci ha chiesto se volevamo
pregare. E noi: Ah??? Non ha mai preso l’iniziativa, quindi, abbiamo pensato che ci fossero ancora
speranze. Comunque, vogliono continuare ad incontrarsi con noi, ma noi no.
E’ evidente che non sono molto vicine al Vangelo e che stanno
provando ad “insegnarci” la
Bibbia. Sono stanca di perdere lo Spirito quando ci riuniamo con loro. Ah.
Succede!
E poi, dopo quella lezione, è successo qualcosa di incredibile… Ale mi ha fatto una sorpresa: UN PALLONE DA RUGBY!!! Ero
così gasata!!! Lei e Mamma Gigante me l’hanno firmato! Ed è blu!! E Ale non sapeva nemmeno che fosse il mio colore preferito!
Mi ha risollevato il morale. Praticamente, mi hanno fatto dimenticare quanto
fosse andata male la lezione con Loredana e Pina. Oggi (P-Day),
l’abbiamo usato per giocarci e l’abbiamo un po’ sporcato e macchiato, ma ci siamo
divertite. Mi mancava giocare a rugby. Sono MOLTO contenta che Ale abbia pensato
di regalarmelo!! Ahh. :)
Venerdì è stata una giornata BOMBA, spiritualmente parlando: siamo andate a
Roma per l’addestramento con Anziano Teixeira, uno dei Settanta. Credo sia
portoghese. Alla conferenza c’erano anche la Sardgna e Napoli, quindi ho rivisto Anziano Ferrero
(eravamo nello stesso distretto all’ MTC di Madrid) ed ho conosciuto tanti altri missionari! Era
bellissimo. C’era anche Anziano Barrow - i nostri genitori si conoscono
da
molto tempo e li ho conosciuti quando ero
andata in visita a BYU due anni fa. È stato bello poter, finalmente, conoscere il figlio di persona! Ed
ho conosciuto una sorella che conosce una delle mie compagne di appartamento a
BYU. Anche quello era FANTASTICO. Anziano Teixeira ci ha aiutati a migliorare le
nostre strategie per trovare simpatizzanti. Ci ha fatto improvvisare varie
situazioni , in modo da poter visualizzare il tutto. Ha condiviso la storia
della conversione della sua famiglia e ci ha praticamente ricordato che non
possiamo mai sapere chi sia pronto a ricevere il Vangelo - la nostra
responsabilità principale è di parlare con TUTTI. Sono quelle cose che si sanno, ma che, dopo
un po’, si perdono di vista. E Sorella Teixeira è stata di grandissimo aiuto perché ci ha invitati a leggere il Libro di Mormon in 65 giorni (Joseph
Smith impiegò lo stesso numero di giorni per tradurlo!) e ci ha promesso che
questo cambierà la
nostra missione. Quandi, abbiamo terminato la conferenza davvero pronti a
spingere avanti il lavoro!
Posso dirvi che accadranno tante belle cose qui in Italia
specialmente con la costruzione del tempio. I membri hanno cosi’ tanta fede e
sono cosi’ preparati ad avere finalmente un tempio nel loro
paese. So che ha gia’ cambiato il lavoro qui moltissimo anche se non e’
ancora completato ma sono SICURA che, quando sara’ finito, la Chiesa in Italia
vedra’ un’esplosione di miracoli. I Templi sono luoghi speciali. Mi manca tanto
poterci andare ma sono grata del fatto che la missione mi abbia insegnato ad apprezzarli
ancora di piu’.
Sabato mattina abbiamo cercato di parlare con le persone.
Stavamo oltrepassando un incrocio quando abbiamo visto una donna dall’altra
parte della strada che e’ amica di Claretta cosi’ ho pensato che potevamo
attraversare la strada e parlare con lei della chiesa. Sorella Margheriti ha
detto che andava bene cosi’ ho capito che la sua intenzione non era di parlare
con lei ma con due persone sedute sui gradini di ingresso dell’ufficio di un dottore dietro di
lei! Mi ha detto dopo che lo Spirito le ha quasi dato uno spintone per farla
andare a parlare con quelle persone perche’ stave quasi continuando a
camminare. Cosi’ abbiamo parlato con loro! La donna era di Santo Domingo e si
chiamava Marina. L’altra persona… non sappiamo il nome ma la prima cosa che ha detto
e’ stata , “ Oh, voi siete mormoni?” con un tono molto derogatorio. Sorella
Margheriti ha cominciato a parlare con lui e nel frattempo io ho parlato con
Marina ed era strano perche’ l’uomo era molto burbero nel parlare dei suoi problem
e poi Marina ( che non lo conosceva prima di questa conversazione) gli ha
detto, “ Deve ascoltarle perche’ le stanno parlando di Dio!!” Bahhh!!! E’
stato cosi’ forte! Poi ho chiesto a Marina se volesse leggere il Libro di Mormon
e che ne sapete, proprio quella mattina mi sono detta che avevo bisogno di
portare uno con me in spagnolo. Bene! Quello era lo Spirito che pensava, non
io. Perche’ Marina ha accettato! E mentre glielo stavo dando ho sentito una
voce che ha detto, “ Ne voglio uno anch’io! Se ne ha uno in italiano lo
prendo!” Mi sono girata e ho visto una minuta donna bionda e le ho detto che
andava bene. Sorella Margheriti aveva sentito tutto cosi’ tutto cio’ che ho
dovuto fare e’ stato girarmi e lei aveva
gia’ uscito la sua copia in italiano del Libro di Mormon da passare a me cosi’
che potessi darla a quella donna. Ma nondimeno! La donna, che si chiama Paola,
conosce una delle sorelle del nostro ramo ( Sorella Calabrese) e mi ha detto
che avevano parlato della chiesa ma che non aveva mai letto il Libro di Mormon!
Era COSI’ INTERESSATA! Quasi ha preteso che le dessimo una copia! E poi Paola
ha detto che era stata in chiesa prima e che sorella Calabrese l’aveva invitata
alla Conferenza Generale e che voleva andarci! E’ STATO UN MOMENTO DI COMPLETA
MERAVIGLIA. Non potevo credere alle mie orecchie!! Ho preso i numeri di
telefono di Paola e Marina e Paola
sarebbe venuta in chiesa ieri ( domenica) se avesse avuto un passaggio. Ma ce
la porteremo la prossima volta!
Per quanto riguarda l’uomo, Sorella Margheriti ha detto che
ha avuto un completo cambiamento di cuore mentre parlavano. Ha iniziato
completamente seccato ed irritato con
Dio e piu’ parlavano e piu’ si raddolciva e a un certo punto ha detto, “ Mia
madre mi disse che non sarei neanche dovuto nascere, forse e’ per questo che ho
avuto tanti problemi nella mia vita. Perche’ sono qui? A che scopo?” E Sorella Margheriti stava quasi piangendo
dalla gioia perche’ il vangelo ha tutte le risposte che lui stava cercando. Gli
abbiamo dato l’opuscolo sul Piano di Salvezza e ha detto che andava bene per lui
incontrarci di nuovo.
Praticamente quando obbediamo ai suggerimenti dello Spirito
il Signore ci manda una scarica di benedizioni. Incredibile. :)
Sabato abbiamo visto di nuovo Alfonso. Ha portato con lui una
persona diversa questa volta. Si chiama Marco ed e’ in pratica come un
missionario a tempo pieno per la loro chiesa, ahahah. Ha forse 70 anni e
conosce molto bene la Bibbia. Mentre parlavamo ad Alfonso del Piano di Salvezza
e del ruolo Gesu’ Cristo Marco ha tirato fuori ogni sorta di scritture che
convalidavano cio’ che stavamo insegnando! Non penso neanche che avesse
intenzione di andare contro quello che stavamo dicendo. Stava solo condividendo
quello che sapeva. Hanno presentato alcune dottrine qui e li’ che non erano
completamente accurate ma non ce ne siamo andati lungo la tangente con queste.
Sembrava come se tutte le domande che Alfonso chiedeva e tutte le Scritture a
cui Marco pensava fossero guidate dallo Spirito- davvero!!! Cosi’ si’, per
quella lezione abbiamo assolutamente sentito lo Spirito. E’ stato incredibile. :)
E Francesco era di nuovo con noi, portava
sempre una forte testimonianza e ci aiutava ad imparare come collaborare con i
membri.
Domenica siamo stati a casa della famiglia Guidara per un
incontro con i giovani adulti! Abbiamo mangiato la pizza fritta e l’insalata di
patate, fagioli, insalata e crispelle….Mmmm. Tutta roba buona. :D Poi abbiamo
passato il tempo insieme facendo dei giochi, abbiamo parlato, abbiamo riso e io
ho suonato il loro bel piano acustico, in pratica tutti ci siamo divertiti :) Davvero amo i membri
di Roma 5. Mi fanno sentire ancora piu’ a casa qui di quanto gia’ non mi senta.
Un‘ultima cosa importunate: L’Anziano Teixeira ci ha
insegnato come usare le cartoline di mormon.org con piu’ efficacia! Invece di
chiedere alle persone se abbiano mai parlato con i missionari , tiriamo fuori
le cartoline, chiediamo loro se vogliono guardarle e poi o iniziamo una
conversazione oppure prendono la cartolina e se ne vanno con questo piccolo
invito di investigare la chiesa! E’ quasi sicuro al cento per cento. Poche
persone dicono di no ed alcune ci hanno chiesto di piu’ su chi siamo e che cosa
e’ questo website!!! E’ proprio formidabile. Anziano Teixeira per sempre. :D
Cosi’ basti dire che il lavoro procede velocemente e che amo
ogni secondo qui. Non c’e’ nessun altro posto in cui vorrei essere!
